easy to change front brake piston boots?

Changed the pads today & fround both sides have a stuffed boot on one of the caliper pistons.

Are these an easy sway or do you need to remove the caliper/ piston & bleed etc?

If you’re going to replace the boot I’d remove the whole calliper and put a new kit in it – you may find the piston(s) seized in the cylinder and that should be fixed. And yes, the calliper should be removed and the system would need bleeding. Also, if one of more of the pistons are seized, you’ll probably have to buy new ones as putting corroded pistons back is a no no – even slightly corroded ones that you’ve cleaned up.

You can replace the boot and seal with the caliper still attached to the line, but you'll have to stop the flow of brake fluid by pinching the line. Pair of vise grips with some thick rubber hose around the brake line worked for me.


The seal is pretty easy to replace, but the boot can be a pain as the piston holds it in place.
Check out youtube, there's heaps on boot, seal & piston replacement, no necessarily Pajero focused but if you're mechanically minded you'll understand. Oh and yes, you'll have to bleed the system. And, what Geoff said about seized pistons applies as per his post.
