wow guys, i am no deisel expert but that looks bad. why does it occur ? is it fuel related such as normal or premium fuels used ? can you use some type of deisel upper engine cleaner to keep this manifold clean , rather than take it off ?

Gosh you love pulling things apart - I bet you were one of those little boys who dismantled all his toys - weren't you?
Actually your photos make me think I should pull my manifold off but I'm going to have to get in the mood to do that one. Have done quite a few mechanical jobs lately and still have a few more to do. Will have to put this one on the "To Do" list.
Repco sell a degreasing agent that is based on Lye - it is about $20 for a 5lt. bottle and should be a good help with what you are dealing with there - you could soak the manifold in it.
Cheers
Geoff

I hope Goodsy will forgive me for hijacking his thread, but what's with the butterfly valves in the manifold?
I know they do stuff like this in petrol manifolds, but I hadn't even heard of it in a diesel. What's that about?
NT Platinum. DiD Auto with 265/70R17 ST Maxx, Lift, Lockers, Lockup Mate, Low range reduction, LRA Aux tank, bull bar, winch, lots of touring stuff. Flappy paddles. MMCS is gone!
Project: NJ SWB. 285/75R16 ST Maxx, 2" OME suspension, 2" body lift, ARB 110, 120l tank, bullbar, scratches, no major dents. Fully engineered in SA. NW DiD & auto in place - a long way to go....
Goodsy, while you have got it all apart would you consider changing the
SCV valve on the injector pump as you now have easy access?
Also, are you going to relocate the Map sensor pickup higher in the manifold similar to the NT and later Paj's.
Cheers Andrew.
2019 MR Triton bog stock at the moment but that will change.

The valves are swirl control valves. They work by increasing air speed across the valve intake supposedly increasing combustion efficiently.
Mine is disconnected as I see the valves as an air intake restriction.
Andrew. I will be replacing the SCV as well. I've had an offer I cannot refuse.
Love this forum.
