No reason it won't still work and will work normally when talking to another 40ch uhf. Obviously you won't be able to talk to anyone on a new 80CH UHF when they are on a channel above 40. The other issue you may find is when trying to talk to someone on a 80CH UHF radio within channel 1-40 is that the volume and or clarity is reduced when you are using a 40CH UHF radio.

      40vs80

The 80ch transceivers are narrower bandwidth than to 40ch. This means they sound less loud (modulate lower level) compared to a 40ch. It also means the reverse that a 40ch will sound louder on a 80ch. The 40ch is perfectly useable, you might one day receive a complaint your signal is splattering across to one of the 41-80 channels as they have been inserted between the first 40 channels.

Depending exactly how old it is (if it was around the time of the change to 80 channel - late 2010 or so) you may be able to upgrade it to an 80 channel by following the instructions in this link: https://www.coastalelectronics.com.a...e_instructions
