3.2 Di-D Diagnostic DIY - without scan tool

Locate the diagnostic port in the driver footwell underneath the fuel filler opener handle.

This picture is not from a pajero but the location is almost identical

Then ground terminal one with a piece of wire

Then switch ignition on and look at the dash lights.

Depending on what codes there are, the following lights may blink

    - Check Engine Light - for engine codes
    - Center diff lock light - for transfer codes
    - Neutral green light - for auto gearbox codes
    - ABS light - for ABS codes

To read these flashing lights are easy.

Count the long flashes followed by the short flashes.

Long flashes denominate 10's and short flashes denominate 1's.

    Example
    _____ _____ _____ __ __ __ __ (Error code 34)

Each code error will have a pause in between and then go to the next error code. At then end it will start from the beginning so if you think you missed a count. Just wait and count again to make sure you have all the errors.

Disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes clears most codes but some codes will only clear during driving if the problem has been solved and the ecu is happy with the diagnostic condition.

    Fault codes below.

    ENGINE CODES

    AUTO BOX CODES

    TRANSFER CASE CODES

4ePikanini, Thank you for the info on the fault codes. I will print it and keep for reference.
Do you or does someone else have the procedure for ecu relearning after the battery has been disconnected for 30 minutes to clear codes. It is something like letting the motor idle for 5 minutes with the A/C on and another 5 with it off. I'm not sure in which order it should be or whether the motor should be warm or cold.

Let it idle from cold to operating temp with aircon on. It takes about 20min. To know when its up to temp, keep an eye on the throttle butterfly that will close about 70% when its up to temp at idle.

Do you think it will work on 3.5l NM as well?

It should work on the petrol with the exception of some engine codes. You will have additional codes and some codes above won't apply.

I am having trouble starting my pajero so I have just done the diagnostics as above. I have no engine codes just a continuously flashing check engine light. Does this indicate no engine error?
The only error code I have is the C/D light flashes 33. This I assume is one of the switches on the transfer case, am I correct?

4E BTW, your link hasn't worked since you posted it. Suspect its a site issue. But there is a nice map showing now

                Shane.

Edit: just tried with IE and its up. so its a firefox issue for me, but the attached pump literatrure is not available.

adrian : if the ecu doesn't pick up a fault then you are going to have use old fashioned fault finding. I suggest starting a new thread and posting more specific behaviour so we can go from there.

shark : the files will only be availabvle to members of that forum. PM me your email address and I can send it to you - maybe you can host it here?

                      Hi All

hope its ok to HiJack the thread for a moment..I'm having the orange flashing light of death issue, followed the without scan tool directions and get 34 on the C/D also the engine symbol and neutral symbol constantly flash also..

Looks like it solenoid related but I'd like a second more knowledgeable opinion..

                      Many thanks in advance
                      Craig

added the post back up to make sense of the reply from 4ePikanini.

Thanks by the way I'll check

look for perished vacuum lines followed by replacing the two solenoids by the airbox on the wheel arch.

                        That should sort you out.

                            Error Code throwback Thursday

So I received the following codes on my transfer codes: 21 (accelerator position sensor) and 33 (transfer switch system) 33 I understand to be one of the switches on the transfer case, so that's ok. But I have a 5/00 NM with the 4m40T not the 4m41T so I don't have fly by wire I don't have an APS. Does any one know what the old 21 code relates to?
                            Cheers.
                            Jules.
