Android stereo or tablet for nav

I'm in two minds at the moment. I want a double din stereo in the car with reverse camera (for the wife) that I can plug our entire music collection into and control from the screen. I also want android navigation for offroad, which is currently running on my phone but a little too small a screen.

    Should I get:
    -Pioneer/Kenwood/whatever double din
    -iPod classic 160GB
    -iPod cable
    -Nexus 7 tablet (salary sacrifice)
-Hold my phone dash bracketry to mount tablet
-Some form of 2A usb power for the tablet (either cigarette plug adapter or new power point)

    OR

    -Parrot Asteroid Smart
    -Parrot steering wheel control box
    -External HDD

Option One will get me a bigger screen and cd/dvd playback. The tablet is also useable away from the car for trip planning, web browsing etc. I believe the camera will show quicker on start up i.e. turn the car on straight into reverse where as the parrot takes 20 seconds to boot to the camera.

Option Two less aftermarket gadgetry on the dash, on road navigation (I'm not overly fussed about this, I know my way around town and if I don't I use my phone which does voice command navigation). Also I won't be running new power outlets for tablets.

    Both cost similar.

I use bluetooth from my galaxy phone now for music but I want to be able to search artist/playlists on the screen, the built in galaxy music app for some reason deletes all the songs out of playlists every few months which is bloody annoying. I also only have a 32gb ext microsd card in the phone which I've had issues with in the past so I probably won't use one in my next phone.

I currently have 55Gb of music hence I want an ipod/hard drive to hold all of it.

Edit: I should also say price is pretty well on par either way I go and the parrot asteroid smart only runs android 2.3 (as do all non ebay android units I've found) where as nexus 7 runs the latest 4.4

what app are you using on the android for Nav? Im looking at the getting the Hema app for $30 bucks, where you have to purchase any detailed maps but I just want to know whether it is worth it? or should i just save my money and get a actually Hema gps?

Was going to something similar, instead I installed a good 1 din pioneer deck and use my nexus 7 tablet for NAV when required. I use a RAM mount and it works really well.

I mostly use hema explorer app, its not to bad and sygic for street nav. I've also got oziexplorer for detailed maps, but rarely use it.

            cheers

The new Pioneer double DIN's will put the phone image on the screen. Would be the way I go. Keep in mind, still uses the data from your phone.
              Cheers, Bundy.

My understanding with mirroring is only limited model phones are supported.

I have ozi explorer and oruxmaps on my stereo. Orux is the main reason i use android for my mapping as the open street maps sourced maps i can get to use on their app are streets ahead of hema or anything else in and around perth and the 4wding areas within a couple of hours drive.

Having had my stereo for nearly a year i wouldn't recommend it. Not the smoothest of options available, I'd prefer to just use a tablet for my 4wd mapping which would also prevent me from having to transfer data back and forth between my desktop computer and the car stereo.

other bits i may miss though are having a hard drive with my entire cd collection plugged in all searchable by voice recognition, the voice recognition for making phone calls is 100 times better than any factory bluetooth I've used also.

Hey thanks for the heads up, Orux looks very interesting, looks like it supports garmin .img files, if so that would be awesome!

I tried to get shonky maps garmin files to work with about a year ago but couldn't get it to work. Admittedly i didn't try very hard. Let me know how you go as if you get it to work i might try some garmin maps.

Possibly, but from what I have read on their website, the new model is a massive improvement over the last wrt mirroring etc.

Had a look last night and none of the garmin unlocked .img files worked. Had a look in the forum and seems that no-one has got any to work. Pity, that would have been awesome!
