    Finally fixed

After reading the massive number of cases where the noise was coming from around the firewall and talking to a 4wd specialist who also mentioned that this was the only place they had ever seen an issue on NX Pajeros I decided to take a last ditch look at the rubber boot around the firewall. This time, I went a bit further and removed more parts than I had before. Specifically I removed the metal plate that forms part of the barrier between the cabin and the firewall (retained by four bolts) and applied Lanox all the way though the join.

What do you know the noise has now stopped!

Thought I'd post the resolution to this in case others might be in the same boat. Buying a new steering column on a 4 year old car just didn't make any sense!

      You guys are legends!

Cannot believe how many people have suffered with this. The moaning sound started not long after I installed a new head unit in my Pajero NT, so I just assumed the reverse camera cable was rubbing on the steering column. You guys + red rubber grease from SCA saved me a lot of time and frustration...thanks all.

Just picked up a 2013 NW GLX and noticed the moaning steering wheel. Quick trip to get some red rubber grease and the problem is solved!
Now to sort out these rattling side mirrors, perhaps I can get some sikaflex in the joins....

After a 2 year hiatus, this sound came back to irritate me on my Paj. The last time I had this treated by a mechanic along with the service as I am not much of a DIY person myself. This time however, buoyed by the information on this thread I gave it a go myself.

Armed with the red rubber grease from SCA, I managed to remove the plastic part blocking access to the steering column, rolled down the plastic sheath leading into the firewall, and liberally applied grease on the column. I also applied some on the rubber to keep it supple as it looked a bit dry and worn. Some struggling in weird positions later, I had managed to resolve the moaning sound from the steering. Was super pleased with myself and that I managed it without breaking a single plastic clip added to the hurrah.

          All's well now.

I have the same thing and have just ordered some red rubber grease, apparently that will do the trick. We shall see

It looked daunting more so for a novice like me. But in essence it's an easy fix. I am highly grateful to this forum for the fix as well as detailed steps.

The red rubber grease from SCA works a treat. I applied it to both the column, as well as the outer layer of rubber. I have some pics on my phone, will try uploading it later.

Hey, I might also have this issue. But from what I can see most responses on here describe the problem as a rubbing sound (which would make sense rubber against the steering column) however my sound sounds like a bit of plastic or something that is rubbing or scrubbing against something. Perhaps this is the clock spring sound, it would have raised its head after they did the airbag replacement.

I'll try and get a video.

Does anyone know what I am talking about?

I'd put some rubber grease on anyway as it is a very common issue and will doing at some point anyway. If the noise stops you know its that, if not can look further. Very hard to describe the noise I experienced sorry.

I got some red rubber grease (penrite) from repco as supercheap seems to have a massive shortage of the one recommended here.

I put some on, but interestingly enough I couldnt get the wheel to make the sound when parked on grass before applying the grease.

Can't really say exactly why but perhaps it's heat related possibly. When mine made a noise it was intermittent and not every turn of the wheel.

After few years of peace.....the dreadful noise has come back few month ago.
I have applied the same red rubber grease I used 2yo back or so, but the noise comes back after 3-4 weeks. This is the 3rd time and it drives me nuts lol.
Is there any other part that requires some lube?
