If you are looking to tow a 2500 kg load,e specially on a rough road, I would steer away from any ute (not that a MUX is a ute, but it is derived from one, as is the Pajero Sport. Reason - I have seen 3 utes with bent chassis, and heaps more photos of the same. As the tug goes over a whoopsie speed hump at speed, the tug is going down whilst the trailer is going up. Result, high loads on towbar, bent chassis. Not saying this will happen with a Paj Sport or a MUX, but the NX monoque construction has been fairly well proven over the years. I haven't heard of any Series 3 or 4 Pajeros with kinks in their roofs. OK - it is a very rare event, but speed humps do flash up in funny places, unseen until it is too late.

The body of the MUX, Pajero Sport, Fortuner and Everest are very strong and constructed in a similar way to the monocoque body construction of the Pajero, except they are all bolted via rubber isolation mounts to a full ladder chassis. The combination of the the full wagon body, shorter rear overhang, coil spring rear suspension and lower GVM's means that these ute derived wagons do not suffer from the same chassis cracking problem as the dual cab utes.

They have in certain use been suffering from this, many owners discuss on social media owners groups & the back up & support network is what it is I suppose, including availability of bits & pieces new & used.
I see Mazda will release a Ute in 2021 based on Isuzu vehicle, Mazda once the ACCC are finished with the lawsuit will certainly be better positioned for backup & support also be interesting vehicle as Mazda finishes a vehicle very well in my opinion. Although it won't be a wagon.
Isuzu has been in Australian matket for decades, could make a worse choice that is for sure.Mitsubishi Pajero NX MY16 GLS with Sand Grabba floor mats, Ultragauge, Automate & Paddle gear shifters with Vlads traction control mod, Nautia switch panel, ARB compressor, Redarc Tow Pro, Anderson plug, Bushskinz front & rear alloy plates, Kaon light duty cargo barrier & rear door table

Info on inner guards and front top cross members cracking.
All exact details are a bit sketchy from what I read. Seems to mainly be those vehicles fitted with steel bars and winches, and second batteries under the bonnet and are vehicles used off the bitumen.
Structural cracking has long been a problem on many 4wds that was even occurring in the 1970's that I am aware off, chassis, inner guards, suspension mounts, engine mounts, gearbox mounts, roof pillars, the list is endless across off all vehicle makes and models.
Most medium duty recreational 4wds tend to have a few points of weaknesses, normally it is associated with the effects of fitting aftermarket accessories or modifications. Even the trusty Gen 4 Pajero has failures in the bash plate mounts from aftermarket plates, front lower cross member from steel bullbar and winch installations and rear floor with some Aux tanks fitted, particularly if driven for extensive periods on corrugated roads.
Excessive tyre pressures, spring rates that are too high, shockers and struts that are too firm, combined with heavy loads and off bitumen driving all transmit huge fatigue loads into a vehicles structure.

I think I'll take me chances with bash plate falling off & I won't be fitting an ARB bar & drive hard through corrugations
The photo's i've seen of MUX & D-Max Body cracks don't impress me that much.
Although as you say, drive on bitumen, don't fit auxillary batteries & bullbars shouldn't be an issue in any way shape or form.
I do think it is a worthy choice, no doubts at all.
There is a few more than one reason it isn't on top of my personal list though this is one reason, a package of reasons it slips down the list for me personally that is.Mitsubishi Pajero NX MY16 GLS with Sand Grabba floor mats, Ultragauge, Automate & Paddle gear shifters with Vlads traction control mod, Nautia switch panel, ARB compressor, Redarc Tow Pro, Anderson plug, Bushskinz front & rear alloy plates, Kaon light duty cargo barrier & rear door table

Hi Everyone, hope you and all your families are well and thank you for all your advice and information to date it has been very helpful. Today I test drove an NX GLX demo and was quite happy with the drive, build date is 2/19 and it has only 1600km on the clock asking price is $k45. I don't know if I am over thinking things but find it a bit strange that the vehicle is 13 months old and only has 1600kms on it, is there anything I should be checking? If I decided to go ahead I will be hitting the dealer up for a discount or some extras like a tow bar. Cheers Martin

When is the dealer proposing the warranty period starts, has the vehicle "lost" a years worth of warranty just because it has been sitting in the dealers yard?
When was the vehicle first registered, this is normally the date when the warranty period starts. If the vehicle has a shorter than normal warranty you could ask for a further discount, extended warranty or free servicing. At the moment it is a buyers market and I suspect it will be for some time so if you are patient then a good deal will come your way. There are not too many people in the position to drop $40K+ on a new car at the moment.

Hi OJ, thanks for your reply. Vehicle was first registered in 2/19 but 7 year warranty will commence from 2/20 plus two years free servicing this promotion finishes tomorrow. I agree it is a buyers market and I will wait and see, we have another 2 weeks before we are in a position to purchase anyway. If possible at some stage I will test drive a Pajero a Sport. Thanks Martin

My current Pajero (a NW) was a 'Demo' when I bought it. It had 16 km on the clock and was 3 months old. The warranty started from date of first registration so I would expect that the same would apply for your purchase. Warranty is based on date of registration, not build date.

I have seen a number of NX's for mid to high $k30 with low kms (30 to 50) and would appreciate any advice on what to look for. Also seen a few new ones for $k49 which is very tempting. I tow a 2350kg caravan with a ball weight of 220 kg, thanks in advance for suggestions or information. Cheers Martin

Another small disadvantage of the Sport is that the lift-up tailgate is a bit too low for me, at 6'4" in the old money. I tried it and it hits my forehead around the middle. Could get used to it, but why take the chance? I can already bash my head into plenty of other things, why pay for another one?
Not sure if longer tailgate struts can be fitted like what is possible on the Challenger.
