    Manual transmission oil change

    Hey all,

Noticed the shifting has been firming up a bit at 70k km.
Might be time for an oil change in the gearbox.
Haven't decided whether I should do it myself or not...

    Anyone done this themselves?
How much would it cost from a mechanic?
Any recommendations for sydney inner west?

    Cheers

Manual trans oil change is not hard to do.only real difficulty is pumping it in. But there are manual pumps available from Stoopidcheap and Repco to help.
I have used a high capacity syringe which is easy to monitor volume input.

    Heating the oil helps too.

Like amec said, it's not super hard. But if you do try it, make sure that you get the filler plug undone first, so you aren't left with an empty transmission and no way to fill it back up again.

Generally, a gearbox shouldn't need an oil change that early. No harm doing it, but not sure it will fix a hard shift problem ??

I had a problem in changing from 3rd to 2nd at about 85K.
Ended in near total baulking but only intermittently.
The manual gearbox has a known problem with faulty synchro on 2nd and has a fix under warranty which means a gearbox rebuild.
My pb had it done under the 10 year drive train warranty (160km limit, I think)
( no cost and a loan ASX whilst being done - 3 days)
Also at the same time it had a total stiffness in changing down 4th to 3rd.
Don’t know if it was linked but much less stiffness after the rebuild.

Now use an anti wear / slip agent in the gearbox.
Make life a bit easier changing gears.
