Replacing or cleaning DiD fuel tank due to dirty fuel

I'm after some advice on cleaning or replacing the fuel tank in my 2010 diesel Pajero. (I live in the southern suburbs of Adelaide.)

I must have picked up some dirty fuel somewhere as I have recently had two occurrences where my car has died due to fuel not getting through.

The first time we happened to be in a country town with a Mitsubishi service centre who were able to fix it for us. They pulled out the mesh 'sock' on the fuel intake from inside the tank (see picture below) and cleaned the mess off it as they didn't have a replacement. That was in June this year. Since then my mechanic has had the car twice to change the fuel filter including about a month ago ahead of a trip away over the Oct long weekend. We kept the fuel level right up and had no probs whilst away, but on the drive home the tank got down to just above 1/4 full and we experienced the same lack of power then cut-out issues. We were able to manually pump the pressure button on the fuel filter to get the enging goin again then limped to a service station where putting in $20 of fuel saw the car running OK and I got it home. I haven't driven it since.

My mechanic has said that he doesn't know anyone who can clean the tank and he recommends I find a replacement tank from a wrecker. Just called a wrecker and they said it would cost $275 but they don't have any at the moment. My mechanic said it would cost a few hours of labour to replace it, so I guess we'd be looking somewhere around $600 or so all up for a replacement.

So, what to do...? Is cleaning it better than replacing it? Does anyone know anyone who cleans tanks?

Just after some advice if possible. Thanks!

Have you looked into Fuel Doctor products?

From the photo it looks like you might have a dose of “diesel bug” which is a type of microbe algae that grows in diesel. It can be hard to get rid of and it can stuff your fuel
system up big time so it must be taken seriously. Google how to get rid of diesel bug algae and it will tell you the process of drain, clean, flush, replace fuel filters and treat with a biocide. It could be through the whole fuel system so replacing the tank will not eliminate it.

        +1.
A shock dose of fuel doctor and new filters for the next 2 tanks of may help. I have done this in the past after seeing my fuel filter had grey gunk on the intake side. That was 2 years ago. Instructions on the bottle. My symptoms were powerloss between 2nd and 3rd while changing up followed by a white sulfer smelling cloud out of the exhaust. Only occurred above 3000rpm while off road.

I do know at least one person who dropped there fuel tanks (ex mine site prado). And slosshed around several litres of clean diesel a few times to clean it out. I dont know if that is a long term fix though.

Thanks everyone for your contribitions. I really appreciate it. I have just ordered a replacement intake filter (Mitsubishi part MR556587) and a new fuel filter and I will have a go at replacing the intake filter (per https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIZfAAFbA6Q.

I also plan to get some of the Fuel Doctor additive.

I spoke with a local Mitsubishi service centre and they can take a look at it for me and probably be able to clean out the tank at a likely cost of at least $400-$500, so I may have to end up going that route.

Id call some miss fueling specialists and ask if they offer diesel polishing for diesel bug. Or you could enquire with marine diesel polishing companies.

If it is diesel bug then no amount of physical cleaning will rid the system of the microbe. You need to stop the growth with a biocide then clean the system out. I would then continue to use the biocide or premium diesel at least the next 6 months to ensure the system is all clear.

Noted. Thanks. Will look into biocide options.

Are you aware if there is a way to test a fuel sample for the problem microbe?

                    Google is your friend
Microbes could be multiplying in your diesel fuel system right now, or maybe you’re here because you’ve already found them and the problems they’ve caused! “So what” you might say, why should I care? Microbes could be getting ready to overwhelm your fuel system, blocking your fuel filters and shutting down your engines, which unfortunately […]

Think about swimming pool bug and algae. We can only clean those we can see, quite a lot infections are hidden. Each time I am about to get tricky fuel, I will get some additive with me CEM works ok so far. Try them for couple tanks to see if it improves. If it works keep using them.

The fuel bug sure is a bar$tard, I used repeated long term high doses of this in a vehicle that was causing me grief. It seemed to work and was far cheaper than the only alternative..

What happens when you kill the fuel bug? Does it break down and can it be filtered out by replacing filters when they clog or does it stay intact and block the suction screen up.
Judging by the Picture of the screen, wouldn’t it be good to remove the tank and wash it out, then fill with fresh fuel and dose it with something so it flushes the whole system.
