The position on the back door makes the extinguisher very accessible even when the rear is fully loaded. However the bracket used should be one of those with a clasp around it that locks with an over-centre action or similar for the very purpose of restraining the extinguisher under impact forces.

You are exactly right. A quick release band clamp of the over centre type is a must for this mounting position, there was one on it but it went to another save someone's A$$/air-intake project not long ago and hasn't been replaced yet.

The first thing i looked at with this set-up was the projectile factor, limited space and easy access pointed to the spot where it is, the band clamp was the safety factor that allowed it to be there.

Just realized that my bottle came also with the restrain - so I've gone and installed it 10 mins ago exactly the way Guru101 did. Looks pretty flash: as if I'm a dinkum 4WDer! Thanks All for the pointers.

But I'm also going to get a 500gm unit for the front - like someone said up the thread it could come in handy for other types of emergencies.... This day and age it could be an issue.

People please note, if we used something in the car to protect ourselves which came in the form of a would-be weapon (such as baseball bat, or golf putter), it could land us in trouble with the law. That's one of the reasons why 5-6 cell torchlights are so popular in the U.S. And we don't have the liberty of carrying HK machine-pistols in their glove compartments, unlike my friends in Manila. Sigh.

Fire Extinguishers should be standard in all new cars.

On the back of Guru101's mounting on the rear door, I've decided on a final mounting place for my own. Over the weekend I placed my fridge and second battery and wired it all up ready for our trip next weekend, and was looking around the cargo area for a suitable place. I toyed with the idea of the top of the wheel arches, but then I spotted the rear grab handles, that are currently no longer in use with the rear seats removed.
So. I figured, a fine thread mounting point (nice and strong), accessible from the back door (while still standing on the ground), and accessible no matter how empty or full the cargo area is loaded.

Does anyone know how much it is to get them recharged? Or is it not worth it - toss and replace?

Yeah, I got mine the same place - one's sitting in my kitchen. You'd never know what the handbrake might startup...

I've often wondered the same thing about the cost of refilling these small ones. If they're not discharged, then I wouldn't imagine it'll cost much.

                      Anybody?

                        1.0kg - 1.5 kg = $29 or $39 with pressure test.

                        As per http://allfireprotection.com.au/serv...inguishers.php

You might aswell just buy a new one IMHO.

I don't know if this applies to road vehicles, or if it's really valid (unless you race your 4wd), but in drag racing we are not allowed to use plastic extinguisher brackets, or brackets with plastic clamps. The brackets, straps and clamps must be metal.
