    Fire Extinguishers and mounting.

I've posted part of this as a reply to another thread, but it probably needs to have its own thread for all to see.

For those that don't have one yet, they are a really good investment for the protection of your pride and joy, not to mention all the accessories we have fitted to our vehicles that no matter how much they promise they will, wont get covered by your insurance company should the vehicle be destroyed by fire.

I'd like to see where people have theirs mounted, so lets see some pics. I've yet to mount mine properly, so I'm looking to pinch some ideas too...

Fire extinguishers are better mounted on their side in a vehicle. Fitted upright, the vibrations will compact the powder in the extinguisher into a solid lump, which then wont get expelled when you actually need it. So, you either remove the extinguisher periodically and turn it upside-down (you should hear and fell the powder move around), or remount it elsewhere on its side. Particularly if it's mounted front to rear, as opposed to side to side, then the acceleration and decelleration of the vehicle will keep the powder moving.

As I am the only driver of my Paj I use the seat slide bar in the front and have my mine installed via electrcians ties to it. I check them occasionaly and they aren't wearing at all and remain secure after 12 months

It doesn't move and doesn't get in the way at all so it isn't noticed when driving.

I have one bolted to the cargo barrier (Vertical) in the back and another one bolted to the transmission tunnel (Horizontal) on the passengers side in the front.

How do people go with sliding their seats forward with them bolted in front of the rails?

Ideally they should be in reach by both the driver and passenger whilst in their seats.

I've got mine bolted to the cargo barrier, and it came in very handy when I had a small mishap with a gas bottle regulator on Coopers Creek a month ago......

The seat clears it no worries. The Missus has our seat nearly fully forward and there's heaps of clearance.
                    Cheers, John.

Mine's in the back. I know it's recommended to have it as accessible as possible, and like some of the pictures above.
A not-so-obvious reason for having in the front: a Firetalk instructor once told me his daughter was a non-victim of car-jacking. Instead of reaching for her purse, she grabbed the extinguisher blasted the guy

Here's mine... Bracket is a bit nasty but its tough and supports the plastic nicely as the bracket transfers the weight and force to the centre console's metal mounts.

Here is mine mounted to the back door, i just removed the standard handle, adjusted the mounting plates on the extinguisher bracket and screwed it straight on. Has been hanging there for almost 4 years without an issue.

OK, so the guys that mount them to the cargo barrier, are they mounted in the back or in the front?

If in the back, you have to climb out, open the back door to get it yeh? Better than not having one of course. I wouldn't want one mounted in front, as it could become a missile in an accident.

I only carry one when travelling on trips at the moment, but have been looking for a place to put it all the time. Just can't bring myself to screw a nasty bracket to a 2008 Exceed !! Unless of course I can get a leather covered fire extinguisher

Mine's on the back of the cargo barrier at the moment. I intend to put another one in the front passenger footwell.
