Default Mystery rattle

Okay, for a while now I've been getting an intermittent loud rattle on start up. Doesn't happen every day and it goes away after a minute or so.

The rattle itself is random, so no rhythm to it. The sound itself can be quite loud and sharp like there is a loose ball bearing or nut being flicked around in a metal housing.

Valve adjustment was done earlier in the year and my immediate thought was, is there a socket of nut loose in there. But I can't see how it can be so randomly happening if that was the case. I guess there could be something lodging clear but every so often being dislodged and thrown around again, but then it wouldn't just be on start up.

Other thought I had was timing chain tensioner. Don't know if it's oil pressure operated and maybe sticking occasionally maybe? Timing chain itself was replaced last year.

None of the pulleys etc appear to be loose or anything.

I've been trying to record the sound but usually by the time I hear it, pop the bonnet and start the record on the phone it's stopped. Then of course as soon as I've given up after a couple of minutes recording nothing unusual and stop the recording it'll start again for a few seconds. If I try to start the recording before starting the car it never makes the noise.

I want to take it to get looked at but I'd possibly need to leave it for a week until they get to hear it. And even then the chance of a diagnosis in the brief time it happens would be unlikely.

Any thoughts?

Won't be the timing chain as it's a belt.

Default Mystery Rattle

As you have had recent repairs carried out,I would check the following.
1. The crankshaft pulley nut for correct torque
2. Alternator mounting bolts and any other bolts that were disturbed during Camshaft Belt replacement
3. A good quality Oil Filter that has a non return Valve.
4. Any steel pipes that may be touching and vibrating

Doh! I new that

Thanks for the suggestions Hickos, hadn't thought of any pipes or anything being disturbed when they did the valves. I'll have a look when I get the chance.

Most of the pulley wheels feel firm but I can't reach them all easily so will need to get my hands dirty and dig a bit deeper.
