Does that apply to after market upgrades ? It doesn't say so.

Second stage manufacture is aftermarket. First stage manufacturer is the company making the car eg Mitsubishi.

It's confusing to read. They say it applies a new vehicle so the way I read it that means vehicles purchased after the 1st July are no longer allowed to have upgrades but existing vehicles can. Have I got that right ?

In reality, how many 'modded' vehicles go through the re-certification stage anyway?
I know I upgraded my suspension and yet didn't get anything to suggest my GCM had increased.
            Am I alone there?

It is GCM upgrades that have been banned not GVM upgrades. A very big difference. This doesn't stop people upgrading their cars GVM. What it is banning is second stage manufacture GCM upgrades, which is new vehicles being upgraded by a second party before sale.

Think of the importers of RAM / Chevy / Dodge trucks for example. They import the vehicles from new then modify them for sale in Australia (second stage manufacture). This ban means that they can not increase the rated GCM from the factory specs.

Others affected would be the likes of HSV and FPV / Tickford who are second stage manufacturers. They won't be able to upgrade the GCM of their respective utes.

Things seem to be misleading in that article.

It would appear that ssm GVM upgrades are still ok.

GVM being gross vehicle mass or max weight the vehicle can be.

What can’t be done is an GCM nor tow capacity increase.

GCM being gross combined mass or total mass of the vehicle and trailer.

I guess there have been GVM upgrades which have been taken to apply the same increase over the factory spec GVM to the factory spec tow capacity and/or GCM.

Eg factory GVM 3000kg gets GVM upgrade to 3500kg. Factory GCM of 6000kg and factory tow capacity of 3000. The upgrade GCM still remains at 6000kg. You don’t get to add another 500kg to the GCM nor the towing capacity. Effectively if you wanted to load up the vehicle an extra 500kg in this example you’d have to reduce your tow capacity 500kg to 2500kg.

Exactly. Hopefully this is the first step and the next target will be the ute market with their bull$*#t 3500kg towing capacities.

Do any of them have a higher GCM than Pajero? Yes, on paper they can tow a heavier trailer, but can't move as much combined mass. Smoke & mirrors?

The Amarock GCM is 6,000kg. The NS Pajero is 5,530kg. Don't know what the NT is.

No More GCM upgrades on New Vehicles

Current NX has a GCM of 6030kg as did the NW.

I think the GCM increased to 6030kg when the towing capacity increased to 3000kg.
