      We have used Castrol Magnatec 15W-40 since new in our NT. Our oil changes are done by every 7500km. The dealer uses Castrol Super. He reckons ours is an ideal oil to use - better than the Mits spec they use! Castrol and the dealer told us that the 5W is only necessary for lots of "cold climate use"...like in Tassie or the snow. For anyone in Mid NSW up to North QLD and everywhere in between, the 15W is the preferred spec oil.

      Who knows for sure, but so far (35,000km) no probs at all and she's still purring!

        I spoke to the service department of the MM dealer where I bought my NW, asking which oil they use for the NW. They use Valvoline 15W-40, which I understand is a mineral oil, apparently mineral oil is OK if it meets the specifications shown in the owners handbook.
        What makes things confusing, engine oil recommendations for the NW are not yet listed on the oil companies websites such as Caltex, Mobil, Valvoline etc, the latest being the NT. The early NT's still had a DPF and the oil recommendation for the NT is for full synthetic oil as required for the vehicles with DPF's. The notes at the bottom of the recommendations say "DPF shown" Apparently the later NT's and NW's do not require an oil to the same stringent recommendations as listed on the websites.
        It appears that synthetic oil can be used but is not essential.
        I don't know how long it will be before oil companies make recommendations for the NW, which will make things a lot clearer.

          I use penrite.
          5w-40

          Eviro is for dpf.
          Hpr diesel 5 for current.

          Castrol.
          Magnatec diesl pro b4. Suits dpf.

          If you read the data sheets for the oils all the anCswers are there.

          The first lil listed is usualy. Dpf. The next couple are. Ot always suitable for dpf but fine for later nt on

            Well i had decided to use the Penrite HPR diesel 5 which i might still use, Supercheap Autos sell it for $91.95 for a 10 litre container, but today i called a local oil supplier who i previously used for my prado and enquired about castrol edge 0W-40 which supercheap sell for $84.95 for 5 litres which is a bit expensive, well my local supplier can get the castrol edge 3X5 litre packs for $94.60 which works out at $31.52 for 5 litres alot better than supercheap. still considering which one, what does everyone think.

                Thanks HSV Rangie will give Repco a go, the only thing that concerns my about the Castrol Edge 0W-40 is availability if i am away around Australia. apart from that i think the castrol is a better oil.

                  All I know is that the hpr tested ok after 15 k.
                  I was going to use castrol magtech diesel pro B4 but was to inconvienie t to get.

                  So penrite seemed the go.

                    Agree i think the Penrite HPR Diesel 5 will be my choice and its easy to source, next service at 7,500 kms.

                            Well just checked the Castrol & Penrite lube guide this morning and they have updated their site to include the 2011-2012 NW DiD Pajero, nothing really new with the engine oil side of things, however have noticed that Penrite have listed their ATF MHP Multi Vehicle Semi Synthetic Auto Trans Fluid oil as "PA" compatible with the Aisin ATF Gearbox & Mitsubishi Diamond SP-III (SP-3), PA.
                            Interesting Castrol lube guide still says refer to Dealer ( maybe because castrol supply the 20 litre containers to Mitsubishi).

                              My guess is that with fixed price servicing the dealer will use whichever oil that meets minimum specs he can buy at the lowest price = more profit.

                              Dealers have no incentive to use an expensive oil if a cheaper one meets specs.

                                The discussion about Manufacturers declining warranty claims seem unhelpful to me.

                                The 2012 (3.2L Diesel) Owner's Manual says to determine viscosity requirement first. Most places in Australia would be very well served by an SAE20W-40 product: -10 to 50+ degrees C. Most oils exceed that standard.

                                The Owner's Manual then says conforming to ACEA - A1/B1, A3/B3, A3/B4, or A4/B5; and API - CD or higher. Most companies have product that meets those specs on their lowest price-point oil and their premium products easily exceed the spec.

                                My searching found that it would be hard to find a known brand-name diesel oil that did not meet the requirements. Is that not your experience?

                                Several mechanics have recommended to me over the years, that using an entry level oil (meeting spec) and changing it more frequently is preferable, esp. if vehicle does short trips from cold.
