    A/C compressor noise??

Have noticed when car is idling & A/C is on that there is a continuous oscillating noise occurring that I was told is most likely the A/C compressor as it is not the A/C belt & stops as soon as the A/C is turned off.

Took it to an A/C repair shop & they said its about $1000 to replace the compressor, but that they couldn't be sure the was absolutely going to fix it!

Sounds like a lot of $$ for no guarantee.

Any suggestions on where to get cheaper A/C compressors (Amayama maybe?) or how to rule this in or out as the cause of the noise would be appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Sam

      Thanks Peterng.
      Good suggestion.

I'm guessing that most of the cost if replacing in the part (ie.compressor) rather than the labour?

Don’t forget you’ll still need to have an a/c workshop do the removal and refit (illegal to vent a/c refrigerant into the atmosphere) and then have the system vacuumed and then filled with refrigerant. Plus if you’ve supplied any of the parts, they won’t be providing any warranty.

How much was the compressor in the quote you received? For the risk and messing about, you’d want to save a decent amount (especially if your going with a ‘cheaper’ type compressor rather than a good quality one).

Have you considered getting an opinion from another company?

It’s a shame you’re not in Adelaide... I’d be able to put you onto an honest and knowledgeable auto a/c specialist.

          Thanks geopaj.
I haven't had a second quote yet, but will do so soon.

I might see if Amayama do the MM compressor if I get the part number from our local dealer. Might be considerably cheaper for parts, however, as you say the installer would not warranty anything.

So probably best to speak to a few A/C service people to get a better feel for what's reasonable & will get th e job done right.

          Cheers,

Overall quote to have it replaced from the one A/C place I've visited was around $1000.

Yeah, but that’s for the whole job - labour, system vac, degas, parts (inc compressor), etc.

Unless you know how much they are quoting for the supply of the compressor, how do you know if any one you source is going to be cheaper? - I suspect they will be able to source a non genuine compressor for less than a genuine MM one through Amayama or Partsouq.

The part number I came up with, and it is based on your model not your vin number is
7813A085. It's bad news though, megazip, where I got the part number from was
$1500 US, that is without shipping. Partsouq was $1474.34 US, also without shipping. Amayama had no stock, but at a guess $1300, without shipping.

I imagine, the reduced price for the air compressor, is that is an exchange one. You broken one gets shipped to someone, in exchange for a reconditioned one.

So, option 1: get a second hand one

Option 2: get yours reconditioned somewhere on the Sunshine Coast or elsewhere in Qld.

Option 3: go with the $1000 replacement and fit.

Option 1 and 2 mean you will have to get someone the degas/regas, and fit. Plus you won't have a warranty on the fitting, it's a customer supplied part; ie no warranty. The reconditioning place will have a warranty, but they may argue if you don't use there installers no warranty.

Personally I think $1000.00 for part and fitting is a good price. Not so much if it isn't the cause of the noise though.

Someone else in this section of the forum is having a noise of unknown origin, one of the suggestions was the airconditioner or idler pulley. Maybe that could be something to look at. I think it was about $50.00 US for new pulley for the aircon.

                Hope it helps

Can the clutch bearing be replaced on these separately without replacing the whole compressor?

                    Hi,
Get the system degassed by a professional.
No real need for a torque wrench to refit a AC compressor
Just do the bolts up. No real stress on that. Just remember that they probably go into a alloy bracket so don't reef to much on the spanner. The bolts are 8mm I would think. Most Denso Comps mounted with that.
If you are replacing the compressor get a new desicant bag fitted.
This is really molecular sieve that removes moisture from the refrigerant.
There is also a filter screen that needs cleaning.
                    Normally comes in a kit.
Looks like the condenser needs to be partially removed to get the bag out as it sits in the tube on the side of the condenser drivers side.
False economy not to do this. When the bag is removed there may be alloy on the filter.
This will be from the old compressor, if there is lots you will need to replace the condenser as they can't be flushed due to small and parallel tubing.
                    Hope that helps
