Default Love a Mystery : Read this...

Car: Mk Triton 2005 GLXR 4x4.

Problem: Only when in 4x4 the car grinds, shakes, vibrates and as you come to a stop it is like a front hand brake is on. Like when your in 4x4 low on bitumen trying to turn, Car needs a bit of clutch to get it going.

Can only get it out of 4x4 in reverse ( sometimes takes half a dozen efforts) with a mighty clunk usually.

Whats been Done: Oils drained and replaced( diff and transfer) no real surprises old oil looked good.

Had the front drive shaft from the transfer to diff replaced with a newbie - balanced as the old joints had some wear. It took a slight vibration I had away. Mechanic thought it was the problem.

This made no difference .

On mechanics hoist diff turned freely and car went in and out of 4x4 without effort.
If driven cold can get out of 4x4 within 200 meters, but once driven more than 200 meters its very hard to get it out of 4x4.

3 mechanics later I have heard it could be , diiff , transfer or gearbox.

Car drives fine in 2wd.

Any ideas more than welcome.... Whats going on?
Who do I take such a car too?

Thanks
Mike.

What is the wheel/tyre situation?
Have an odd tyre on there? Or a large difference in wear. Two new tyres on the front?

Sounds like transmission wind up. Did you buy the car new? If not, has it been repaired and had one of the diffs replaced? maybe with the wrong ratio?

As mentioned, are the tyres all the same size?

2005 Triton - is that Super-Select?

Other than that, I'm with the others - anything different about any of your tyres?

My father in laws Triton is sometimes very difficult to get out of 4x4. It too feels like wind up when this happens. Id love to know what the issue is. His is a 2015 he bought ex demo at 1000k or so.

Would a 2005 be an easy select which couldn't be used in 4x4 mode on bitumen ?

2005 is super select. its more than wind up unfortunately , one mechanic said he could hear the gears grinding as we went for a drive.

It did start while I was 4x4ing on pretty easy fire trail.

It is bad it cant be driven at all in 4x4 anymore. If I go above 40k in 4x4 the whole car shakes bad.
From reading after this post I am starting to think it may be the transfer case chain??? but I dont know.
MMM

not sure . anyone know who can check it out in the south east melb?

Can sound be uploaded. it may help if you can hear it...
Cheers
Mike

Odd , I always thought they only had easy select and no center diff until a few years ago which turned me off the Triton / Challenger back in 2005 when I got my NP Pajero.

Easy Select = 2h, 4h and 4l drive modes.

Super Select = 2h, 4h, 4hlc and 4llc drive modes.
