    Rear side shaft clonking?

    Hi All,
My NT has done 215,000km now without skipping a beat.
At the latest airbag recall I asked the dealer to investigate a "clonk" from the back drive train.

I reverse out my driveway each morning, dab the brakes to stop, hook 1st (manual) and as I let the clutch out I get the "clonk". I can reproduce the sound at will by doing the same thing.

Agents say the drivers side rear side shaft CV joint nearest the wheel has some play and this is causing the "clonk".
    $2100 to replace it.

They've not see this before on any other NT model and I'm well out of drive train warranty - 10yrs or 160,000km whichever comes first.

Anybody out there with a similar issue, or perhaps any other ideas on what is causing this.

    Cheers, Hank

Are you sure the noise is from the back? (get someone to stand outside the car & listen to where it is coming from). Several of my Gen 4 Pajeros have given a loud clunk from the front brake caliper when I stop, then reverse. I believe it is the pads sticking on the caliper slide pins, then releasing. Many people have mentioned this clunk, so its normal.

Some people have found the rear big centre hub nut loose, but mostly on the left side I think. Unsure if it was on NTs, but maybe worth a check. Apparently the specified torque for it is very high - check the online manual or search for the threads on it. I would hope the service centre would have checked this as part of their investigation, but you never know......

I'd be getting a second opinion from a specialist before spending that sort of money, which BTW sounds very high for a CV. The fact they have never seen it before makes me wonder about their diagnosis?

Ditto on the front brake pads.

        Hello:

I had the same issue with my 2010 Montero (NT model in Australia).

I suggest you to check if the rear hub nuts are tight and/or dry, mine was loose, grease and retighten it and the problem was gone, worth a look and free to do.

It is a recurrent issue in this car.

        Regards from Spain.

I recall that this is a fairly common issue on Gen 3s, the lubricant of the shaft splines in the hub gets dried out, greasing the splines and re-tightening the shaft nut usually fixes it. It may just be an age-related issue for the vehicles.

            Thanks all for the inputs.
I know about the front caliper sound, I've heard this a lot over the years and it's quite different. A higher pitched "snap" almost and clearly from the front. A lot quieter also.
This is a lower pitch "clonk" running through the monocoque - or that's what it sounds like.

I had a hub nut re-tightened about 50,000km ago - this was the source of a similar sound.
The agents checked this again and could not establish this as the cause.

I may get the hubs removed at next service to check further.

just to throw out a few uneducated opinions to hopefully help with some troubleshooting

Shock absorber could be shot? when my last set let go they first presented with a clunk when going from reverse into first (especially exacerbated when rolling backward and letting out the clutch).

Lash in the driveline? the factory tolerances are pretty wide. that Russian online workshop manual has a good walkthrough for testing that along with what the tolerances are.

Diff or subframe bushings? my BMW used to have a knock in the rear, and it turned out to be the 2 rear most subframe bushes were flogged.

on a side note, it might be worth getting someone to sit right in the back and press an ear to the ground to try and locate the sound.

              Good Luck!

how old are those Bilstien shocks?
if the oil has wept out, the internals can knock about. the noise travels quite well through the monocoque.

Rear diff mountings bushes most likely your problem. Just replaced mine at 175K. Similar noise now gone.

I had a clunk in the rear when going from reverse to drive, turned out my rear bearings were stuffed, jack it up and check for play.

Hello, this is possible solution for it.

"I drive a Pajero from the year of construction 2011, long version, manual transmission and now have about 200,000 kilometers on the clock.
For me too, this often described Klonk / Klock has developed in recent months - today I have clarified it. I changed the rear inner joints (DOJ) - differential side. First I only managed one, for today and the Klonk is already gone. Now it is time to quickly change the other side, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow."
