4D56T - Broken Main Crank Bolt and other questions

My mechanic broke off the main crankshaft bolt holding the pulleys on my 92 Pajero 4D56T. Anyone out there with a miracle cure?

If not, can I put a newer engine in this machine? If so, how new can I go? I can get a brand new 4D56 I-4 T for 1500.00. Any ideas if it might work?

If not, how much extra work would there be to upgrade to the 2.8 engine? I can't find any 4D56 engines in either US or Canada right now.

Also, does anyone know where I could get a good rebuilt engine I could import to the US? This is in A RHD vehicle I use for my mail route.

    Thanks

For what it's worth in case of any commonality.

I had the crankshaft bolt on my 6G74 (Petrol) engine snap allowing the harmonic balancer to drop off. The bolt had snapped inside the end of the crankshaft and needed to be extracted. To do this they drilled a hole in the end of the old bolt and used "Ezi-outs" to remove the remaining part of the bolt.

A new harmonic balancer and a new bolt and I was on my way again.

      Threads are Galled

Unfortunately, the mechanic says the threads are galled. I looked at them and I'm not sure they can be saved.

I notice the 4d56 was also used in some Hyundai/Kia cars. Not sure if one of them would go on, but just mentioning it in car it gets you out if trouble

Was doing a bit of a Google and came across this page. They seem to rate the kia engine and there is a link there to go to page where you can buy a brand new complete crate engine, price seemed to come to around $3900 I think

I am looking for a good 4d56 2.5 diesel 1992 Delica If you have something let me know. Thanks,

Ive had this happen twice in the last 12 months, first time it took the mechanic a week to get the remnants out of the crank. AU$3000 later was back on the road. It looked at one point that the motor might have to be removed to get at it due to the limited space there.
5 months later it fell off again breaking the bolt in the shaft again, different mechanic with a different approach. Cost me AU$2000 but he arranged for a tradesman that specialised in removing broken bolts, took 2 days and at the time it was discussed that if the bolt threads had been compromised it was possible to resleeve them.
There will be no cheap fix for your problem but i would look into getting someone in that deals specifically with this type of repair.
It will save you time and money in the long run.
