I have three weeks holidays end of year with my two young boys, I want to go bush and take them on a outdoor/back adventure. So I am asking you veteran travellers of this vast land for suggestions of where to go. I was thinking of taking them to the rock but am open to suggestions

Well my holidays have not been approved yet but if at the end of year I would be thinking somewhere with water.
Been thinking of QLD and back down along the coast to home or trying to find a spot on the Murray

End of the year will prob be too hot for touring in that area. High country or tasmania or something perhaps?MY14 NW GLX-R 3.2L Auto Build Thread

Agree with TC Barky that Red Centre might be a bit hot by then; Flinders might still be all right, if it were November/early December. But Tassie would be great, if you can shell out for the fares on the Spirit (an adventure in itself for the kids). Just about anywhere in Tassie is good - there's a story in the latest issue of the Pat Callinan 4WD mag about touring parts of the west coast; on the east coast, and depending on the ages of your kids, I reckon it's hard to beat the history, rather gentle bush walks, camping and swimming on Maria Island (no vehicles, short boat trip from Triabunna); the central plateau area south of M ole Creek (or west of the Great Lakes road) provides lots of 4WDing, fishing, camping, walking - as hard or easy as you like; and there's always the Walls of Jerusalem (the climb up to Trappers hut at the beginning would not be suitable for under 10s) and Cradle country if you start getting bored.....

Mypaj got it right. Forget both the Red Centre and Flinders that time of year - heat, flies and dust. You want to give the boys an enjoyable experience. AFAIK, on the coast it is.MY16 NX GLX5 with just a few bits added. MY14 D-max spacecab, also with a few bits added.

Having lived and seen 5 summers in the NT desert I can confidently say don't take them out that way in summer. It will be blistering hot - to the point you won't be able to do a thing.COOL SILVER MY10 NT DID GLS MANUAL PAJERO - Colour Coded ARB Deluxe Bullbar - Warn X9 Winch - 60L Auxiliary Tank - Towbar - HID Lightforce Spotlights - DIY dual battery system - TX3440 UHF - Lovells/Bilstien suspension - BushSkinz bash plates - Driver with a passion to explore Australia

On one of our pre 4x4 trips we would visit Canberra the war memorial then head down to Bright as the river there is great in summer.
Your kids are young if you can do the theme parks and beaches of QLD and on the way home along the coast take them to a place they can see it on tv, (home and away)

The High Country for 3 weeks prior to Christmas is great, after Christmas it gets over run. Eastern Victoria around Mallacoota Inlet, Strzleki Ranges and Buccan Caves are great places that time of the year. You could take the Hume north up through Kelly Country, Alpine Way to Mt Kossie, south down Tom Groggin to McKillops Bridge, Jacksons Crossing, Buccan Caves, the list is endless!
cheers, old Jack.2011 PB Base White Auto, Smartbar, Cooper STMaxx LT235/85R-16,TPMS, HR TB, 3 x Bushskinz, front +40mm Dobinson , rear +50mm EHDVR Lovells, Dobinson MT struts and shockers, Peddars 5899 cone springs, Windcheater rack, GME UHF, Custom alloy drawer system inc. 30lt Engel & 2 x 30 AH LiFePo batteries + elec controls, Tailgate hi-lift/long struts, Phillips +100 LB & HB, Lightforce 20" single row driving beam LED lightbar, Scanguage II.

I'd hit Fraser Island, take 3 to 4 days to get there from vic (scenic route) spend a week exploring the island, fishing,hiking,swimming,4x4,beach camping, etc the place is awesome! And try get there out of school holidays as the place gets packed! Spend a lazy few days home again down the coast or head out through country towns either way there's plenty of beautiful places between vic and qldSwb nh import 3.0 v6 5spd man, ralliart, lifted, locked and charged on 37" creepys!!
