What are the advantages of a 3" system on a basically stock vehicle ?
          3" too big ?

Is it just noise, or are there genuine gains ?

Best exhaust on a turboed engine is none.
Bigger exhaust including dump pipe brings the boost on sooner at any rpm and lower egr temps.
Bang for buck is for you to decide.
I love mine but others have said it's a waste of money.

I've got a turbo forester, told my tuner to put whatever exhaust he thought was best from his testing. Result was a 3 inch dump and mid, with a 2.5 diffback section.

He reckons his testing shows that this gives more torque in the midrange.

Would the same principle work with a turbo diesel?

Yes it will but it will but the amount will be engine dependant.
