My IPAD, RAM Mount & Hema Navigation

Outback navigation has never been easier with Android and Apple navigation apps available.

I have an Apple IPAD and IPHONE 4S and have purchased both the HEMA maps app and the Mud Mups app.

Having bought and used both apps, I would highly reccomend you buy the HEMA app, Hema are mapping specialists and Mud Maps are not.

    Regards...Graeme

    Hi Graeme

I have an ipad with hema maps, my question is how well does the ram mount work, does hold the ipad in a solid position while travelling on rough roads.

You can't use the iPhone but you can get a external Bluetooth GPS. I have a dual GPS from these guys

I leave it in the back of the car sitting in the drink holder, and permanently plugged in to the rear cigarette lighter.

I looked at those floor mount bendy poles but too many people say the pole couldnt handle the weight of an ipad on corrugations.

I went with a two suction cup windscreen ram mount, but haven't tested it on severe corrugations yet.

I bought the Ram mount from their USA website, much cheaper than in Aus, it was sent UPS and I had it in a few days.

The mount is surprising strong and the ipad does move much at all. I have not done any heavily corrugated outback tracks but it has remained strong through rough tracks etc.

The ipad has a built in GPS and does not need a phone signal to work unlike the iphone 4S.

I also have a RAM windscreen mount for the iphone and it takes great video while driving, will post a pic and a sample video later.

From the photo's you can see how well built RAM Mounts are, this windscreen mount allows my iphone to take great video's but the quality does suffer on corrugations.

I currently use a 3 cup ram mount to the windscreen, I would something smaller, the ram mount was originally to support an old windows tablet.

I was thinking about a clic on.

Mate has one of these external gps device on his ipad and he said it works great. It is not wireless. He found anything bluetooth hooked up to the ipad sucked the battery to quick.

I did a typo earlier, it should have read:

The ipad has a built in GPS and does need "NOT" a phone signal to work unlike the iphone 4S.

Looks good but my ipad has the smaller socket at the bottom and it won't plug in, might just use my wife's Samsung if I can pry it from her long enough to use !

                          Hi cam,
I have a retina ipad as well, the GPS connects via Bluetooth.
The ipad is charged from the front cigarette lighter socket.

That chunk of sheet metal you've made for your usb sockets looks awfully dangerous - how long until you slice your shin open on it? why didn't you put it in the dash or under the seat with the ipad stand or in the glove box or in the centre console? or, why didn't you flush mount the sockets onto the plastic panel that yours is attached to?

Hi Dimmo - You were right about the chunk of metal, took your advice and fitted one on each side of the centre console.
