All diesels smell for first few minutes after cold start - is this your first diesel?

Did it smell before you did the work? How long ago - might just be burning off sealant, gaskets, etc?

Have you had the fuel rails/injectors apart? These are very precise components & can leak diesel into the sump if not done perfectly - check your engine oil level to make sure it hasn't gone overfull with diesel dilution.

Sounds like it may have an exhaust leak up front? Listen for any extra exhaust noise near pipes/engine. Using a good torch, start it cold in the dark & look for exhaust gases leaking out. Only when stone cold, you can squirt water onto the exhaust pipes & joins to see if any escaping gases spray the water outwards (but not near fan, electrics, etc.)
