Axles too long for diff locker

    Good Morning,
Have purchased an aftermarket diff locker for my NH pajero 9" diff
Part Nr RD 46. Installed locker, new bearings, set up bearing preload and backlash was excited as I installed the centre. Time came to install the first axle, crap, won't sit flush, hitting, install other axle, same issue, splines bottom out. Removed diff centre, found issue, require shorter axles.
    So here's the question, is there a rear track difference between gen1 3ltr v6 and gen2 3ltr V6.
Or will the axles out of an 8" open diff fit the 9" diff as they have the same diameter and 28 splines
Or extend the splines on my currant axles, with potential weakening of the axle shaft. At the extended spline end???
    Thankyou in advance Andy.

If done properly yours should be good if modified right but maybe a diff specialist should be able to give you better advice than me

are you talking front or rear diff as the sizes you have given don't ring true for either end of the car

Lol, definatly not using an angle grinder to extend the axle splines lol.
My dad's a fitter and turner and has extended a lot of various axle splines. It was he that warned me of the strength issue at the newly cut spline end.

Wished I had seen this post before my debarkle lol, had to reinstall the LSD for our emu creek trip lol.

I only had to extend one axel spline by 5mm (but went 10mm just to be safe) so no real weakening of the axel. It was done very CAREFULLY with the angle grinder and 1mm disc and since the install it has worked flawlessly. 10 minutes on a grinder as opposed to $$$ and time to get a "professional" to do it, you do the math. End result, it works perfectly and cost nothing. Different strokes for different folks, if you feel it nesassary to have someone else do the job for you then by all means go ahead. I myself felt it wasn't really nesassary and I needed my car to get to work the next day.

wondering if it was an ARB rd46 or a chinese rd46? I have an ARB rear (rd46) and had no issues with my axles fitting correctly.

Mine was a chinese knock off of the ARB unit, but was half the price too! A small axel adjustment is nothing compared to the cost of an overly priced ARB diff locker

My front and rear lockers have been given a thrashing over the last six months with no sign of trouble and they do come with a warrantee. Happy so far!

Both LH and RH axles won't seat. LH is further out though.
                      And yes, Chinese ARB lol

Just thinking outside the box but are both axels the same length? Just wondering if you may have swapped the left and right because I only had trouble with the passenger side. Drivers side was fine.
