NS Rear Wheel Bearings - Premature Failures

    Hi all,

    Asking for a mate....

He has a NS oiler, and he's having to replace rear wheel bearings with ridiculous regularity.
Genuine or aftermarket doesn't seem to matter. Nothing lasts.
He does tow a hybrid, and he does go off road, but the failure rate is beyond funny.

    Have others experienced similar?
    Is this a known issue?
    Is there a fix?

    TIA.

      Also consider;

      Incorrect rear wheel alignment.

      Rear wheels out of balance.

      Hub nuts not tight enough.

Running tyre pressures too high for load carried and roads traveled.

Premature failure of aftermarket replacement bearings isn't unfamiliar, but genuine normally last well. Where are the "genuine" being purchased? I recall some fine print at Partsouq implying that they'll substitute whatever they have available - if genuine were not in stock, who knows what was shipped?

Hub nut must not only be super tight (200+nm) but this must be done before wheel goes back on and is put on ground. Failure to pre load the bearing in this way will lead to premature failure

            Thanks for the replies.

The original factory alloys are still fitted.

The replacement bearings (both genuine and aftermarket) have been supplied by the installer, so no guarantee of the source.

Will ask about rear alignment and installation procedure.

            Cheers.

Might be close to the mark. Spoke with the owner last night. When the last pair were changed (very recently), the mechanic said that they "weren't as tight as they could have been". Hopefully he's tightened them correctly. At least he seems aware of it.

Perhaps the problem's been with the installation, rather than the bearings or anything else. Makes sense. The original bearings lasted 200k.

              Cheers all....

Failed rear wheel bearings are almost unheard of. And I've been around here for 15 years. There has to be something else at play here.

I would advise to purchase genuine bearings (either locally, or from an overseas web site) to supply for installation. Yes they cost more, but how much is regular replacement costing?

Can I just confirm its 220nm for the 36 mm hub bolt? Just in the process of putting my hub knuckle back on after a failure at 102,000

                      Correct, +/- 10Nm.
