    Front/Rear differentials and Transfer Case oil change

    Hi all,
    2012 Pajero DiD NW Auto
    This weekend I will be changing Front/Rear Diffs and Transfer Case oil for the first time. Last year I’ve got overcharged by a mechanic for the same job, so I am back to DIY, as I’ve always done all the basic maintenance on my cars.
    Can someone check my pictures and confirm that they are correct? I want to make sure that I am not loosing the wrong filler/drain plugs.

    Regarding the oils, I was planning to buy Penrite Pro Gear Oil - 75W-85 (GL 4 full synthetic) for the Transfer Case and Penrite Gear Oil - 80W-90 (GL-5 mineral) for the differentials.
    I’ve got an oil hand pump for differentials. Any other suggestions?

    Plugs are right.

    What about the auto?

    What were you charged previously?

    Daily driver NX GLX
    Semi retired NL GLS 3.5 (no airbags) in almost prestine condition to replace NJ.
    Virtually fully retired NJ 2.8TD
    Previously - NB LWB, NA SWB.

      $240 for the differentials.
      The transmission fluid has been changed 6 months ago. I did ask the mechanic to do the transfer case oil at the same time but apparently hasn't been done. At least I did not get charged for that.

        Don't forget to crack the filler plugs "first"

        1 - to help the oil drain out of the diff.
        2 - no point draining the diffs first then finding you can't undo the filler plug.
        02 NM 3.2, Auto, Exceed, I/C and sump guards, L&B 2" lift, 265/75/16 OPAT2.

          Also give a good clean around the filler and drain plugs before undoing them and obviously car on a level surface as possible. Refill until the oil starts to dribble out the filler plug.

            I always make sure I can get the fillers out before I drop the oils.

            Nothing worse than dropping oils then finding the filler is to tight to get out. Particularly on Pajeros with the very thin filler plugs.

            I always use a single hex, 6 sided impact socket for the purpose.

              Gearbox oil / Diff oil

              When I researched oil types for NP Pajero V6 3.8 a few years back, this is what I came up with (info from forum and Mitshibishi at the time)
              Item Brand Part No. Quantity Capacity
              Engine Oil Castrol Magnatec 10W30 5L 4.8L
              Gearbox Oil Castrol VMX-M 75W85 4L 3.2L
              Transfer case Oil Castrol VMX-M 75W85 4L 2.8L
              Diff Oil Castrol LSX90 4L 1.6L / 1.2(F)

              Note: I remember that everyone was very particular about using Castrol VMX-M 75W85 for Manual gearbox and transfer case as there were allot of problems encountered with other brands.
              Diff and engine oil not as critical.
              I have used it for years without an issue.

                Don’t forget to use new washers (or use thread seal tape like I’ve been known to do)
                Pretty dodgy but works...

                  The socket you’ll need is a 15/16 preferably 6 sided and a torque wrench

                    This is a Japanese car, everything is metric. 24mm.
                    NT Platinum. DiD Auto with 265/70R17 ST Maxx, Lift, Lockers, Lockup Mate, Low range reduction, LRA Aux tank, bull bar, winch, lots of touring stuff. Flappy paddles. MMCS is gone!

                    Project: NJ SWB. 285/75R16 ST Maxx, 2" OME suspension, 2" body lift, ARB 110, 120l tank, bullbar, scratches, no major dents. Fully engineered in SA. NW DiD & auto in place - a long way to go....

                      Sockets seems to be 24mm, I'll finally get this job done tomorrow

                        15/16 is same as 24mm

                        7/8 is same as 22mm

                        3/4 is same as 19mm

                        9/16 is same as 14mm

                        13/16 is same as wheel nuts. Often use a spark plug socket for wheel nuts.

                        As an old school earthmoving mechanic grew up with imperial tools. Learnt very early what imperial tools fitted mertric bolts.

                        I don't own a metric socket set. Only a handful of metric sockets that don't have imperial equivalents like 10mm, 12mm and 17mm. And 15mm and 18mm for some European metric odd bods.

                          Ditto on the washers its a very good practice and prevents weeping on the drain plug torquing all the plugs is advisable also although I have been struggling to find the correct torque settings. Pleasing to see they are magnetic drain plugs. I just did mine and very easy to do I used the std Castrol oils Mitsubishi specifies. Like engine oil I tend to change mine ahead of the specified intervals.

                            All torque values can be found in the online tech manual on this forum along with loads of other info, diagrams etc.

                              Front and rear diff.......drain plug 65nm, filler plug 50nm
                              Transfer.........drain and filler plugs 32nm
