Help with my Automatic SWB pajero

Hi people. I am from India and I have a SWB pajero, automatic with a 4m40 engine. The automatic was never sold in India, and neither was the SWB. The Car has been bought used, fairly cheap, with an issue I hope to be able to rectify.
My car moves extremely sluggishly when slotted into D. However starring from L, gets it moving smartly and then shifts into 2 and D gets it moving quite well to decent speeds.
Even R, works well with no sign of sluggishness.
I have changed the ATF and the transmission filters, and the ATF levels are correct, but no change.
Could anybody guide me on what I should do next and how I can solve this issue?
I'm technically fairly competent and have access to a full fledged service centre. With all necessary tools and equipment.
All help will be hugely appreciated.
I also have a spare automatic transmission, of doubtful history and condition.

Thank you for the response. I have checked and my switch is in the middle position. Made no difference when toggled to other positions either.

I also just happened to notice that the indicator lights show P, R, N 2 and L but does not light up for D.

That at least is easy. D gets a lot more time and the bulb burns out. Ignore or replace the bulb in the dash.
=-( Sadly bought back: 99 NL Shortie. In a-peeling blue
=-) Happily replaced by: 98 NL LWB Diesel

            Oh ok. Thank you.

I've been given conflicting advice from
            A) failed valve body assembly
            B) failed transmission ecm
            C) failed torque converter.

I have the same problem with my 1991 SWB

First thing I did was to drain and flush down all the old ATF and replace the filter iof the transmission.

              It will definitely drive better.
