Problem solved, hopefully. Scored a Warn XD9000 for $50 with control box. No cable or controller, but was going to get synthetic anyway. Tested it and it was noisy but ran so I'll clean it up and give it a good grease. If gears are stuffed the motor will fit on this superwinch that I have anyway
