    CV Boot Holed

Just had the rear wheel off with the intention to change the brake pads and noticed this:

    Bugga!

Probably hard to get a warranty on it I suppose. What are my options? Do I take it to a CV specialist/mechanic to change the boot? Does it need an overhaul? I don't know how long its been there. I presume it's been punctured by a gibber somewhere between 45000km and 52000km on the clock. Now sitting ~57500km. Then again could have been a stick in the forests out the back of Coffs Harbour a couple of weeks ago.
Another option would be to get a new driveshaft and swap over then service the holed one. I'd be left with a spare rear driveshaft but that's a bit of money sitting around taking space.

Are there repair kits available? I'm almost tempted to try to fuse the hole closed but it is rubber and not plastic right?

On the plus side the pads still have 4mm on them so still a couple of mills to go.

If you don't know how long the damage has been there I would get them serviced and new boots fitted, try suspension places going to be much cheaper than MM. You can buy kits and DIY but sometimes it is not worth the effort, the kits have a split boot that glues together, I would prefer a completely moulded one piece new boot. And by your post you have done 500,000km since lol to many fingers when typing

Don't know what you're talking about

I'd prefer a single moulded boot too. Just wondering whether an on-car repair is a viable option?

Very unlikey to be able to get a glue to repair the split in the booyt as the split will be contaminated with grease. Best to remove shaft and throughly clean the joint , regrease and fit a new boot.

For an emergency repair, best to jack the wheel clear of the ground and get someone to rotate the tyre so you can apply many layers of duct tape over the boot to prevent water and dirt entering the boot. Works best if the outside of the boot is cleaned with Shellite or metho or propyl alcohol.

Well when you find out, let me know the part#.....

You may well have seen I tried a warranty claim on my boot and have since given up in disgust at the whole dealer and MMA head office fiasco. Its a joke and I will tell you, there will not be another mitsy in my garage again - totally over their bullsh1t

but on another note, the service guy told me a boot repair kit was available for $108. A complete shaft $2400. So if you find out the boot kit part#, I would like to know because I still need to have mine seen to. My plan is to drop the shaft into a CV joint, ask then to service it and re band the new MMA boot to it.

There are lots of reports aftermarket boots are rubbish. So if the $108 price is correct, that would be a good investment IMO.

Here in Brizvegas I've had CVs serviced and new boots installed by a company called Australian CV Joints. Service is drive in drive out and wasn't expensive at all to the degree that I'd never even consider doing one myself. They use aftermarket boots which have never given me any trouble.
            Cheers, John.

I’ve done two or three boots on my vehicle myself and not had any trouble – if you have a bit of mechanical knowledge it’s not a hard job – just messy cleaning the grease etc. The only ‘special tools’ you need to have are as set of circlip pliers to remove a big circlip on the CV and the pliers to tension the band that goes around the boot – they’re inexpensive and available from e-Bay – at a pinch you could use normal pliers but the proper tool is best.

The aftermarket boots I sourced are fine and about one fifth the cost of the genuine ones – just have to make sure you get one that fits.

              Cheers

Might have to find a similar joint in Sydney.

I nearly got a banding tool when I had the NJ. I might have to make that investment now.

Yeah your experience is in my thoughts. Bloody hell that is expensive. I looked it up on Partsouq and it’s listing at $1500 but unavailable. Actually just looked again now and it’s down to AUD$1082, bargain but still unavailable.
Looking for a genuine boot but getting the correct part # is proving difficult or at least I’m not 100% sure.
The page I’m looking at is https://partsouq.com/en/catalog/genu...lyv98wgj003236

The part I think is the one is 3715A142. Incidentally the joint kit for the outer is $295 but last night it was $500 Now I’m assuming that the joint kit is replacement cage, balls, cup, circlips and boot. That boot kit is listing at AUD45.82 the Febest at $20 but I’d go local supply if I go Febest.

Went onto the Febest eBay store and there are plenty of parts listed but I can’t specifically find V98W only seem to be V87W. Although I reckon there is a pretty high probability it’s compatible.

I’m going to have to get under the car and take some measurements I think.

Sharkcaver there is a CV place in Osbourne Park, seems OK if you ignore the condition of the shop and first up appearance but they are pretty helpful. I got the old NP done there any yes new CV complete units were about $2500.
