            Hi all,

I am looking at my insurance. Currently insured with AAMI, pretty much only because I forgot to sort insurance prior to leaving work to go to the dealer to pick up my car when I bought it new about nine months ago...

I have read through this thread. Has anyone had any recent experience with claims for their 4x4 with any of the insurers mentioned?

If so would you care to share your experience and details of the claim?

I'm yet to get any quotes, however will have a look at a few PDS and the like over the next day or so.

            Cheers

I rang up and queried the market value. They said take no notice and as it is a new car if in the event of a write off, I will receive the latest model car and every accessory I have listed. The lady then suggested I do agreed value when I sign up after the 2 year period is over. Seems good to me.

Lot of talk of accessories, what is everyone's experience with club 4x4 and vehicle modification? I'm with cgu who in the pds say to notify of any modification, but when calling say they won't cover the mod, despite no clause in the pds saying there may be some exclusions.

The RAA in SA has recently added a few extra benefits:
                  - If you buy a brand new car manufactured from 2014 & insure it continuously with them from new, they will replace it with a brand new car if it is written off, regardless of age (not the usual 1 or 2 year limitation), so in these circumstances, Market Value never comes into play.
                  - They cover unlimited windscreen or window claims

The down side is they do not cover damage caused by dirty fuel or water in fuel, but do cover accidental mis-fueling damage.

I wouldn't have thought any auto insurers would cover dirty fuel or water in the fuel - though in every case I've heard of where it was able to be proven that the contaminated fuel was due to a servo issue the owners have been successful in claiming repair costs from the servo at fault.

That's similar to what the RAA said when I queried it. My concern is if you can't identify or prove where the contaminated fuel came from, eg, if you bought fuel at more than one servo (like topping up in remote areas whenever you can get fuel), jerry cans, etc. My view is if it is accidental damage to my car it should be covered - my mission now is to get them to change their policy (I like challenges!).

Interestingly, Shannons said they would cover it, but unfortunately their policy is well behind the RAA in many other ways.

Club4x4 have made some changes to their PDS regarding the Offroad recovery insurance. This has resulted in some increased premiums and excess's which was to be expected, but it is good to know these guys have listened and come up with a viable solution.

If your vehicle suffers a mechanical failure or cannot be driven and you require assistance from a third party to
transport, tow or recover your vehicle while driving off-road, we will reimburse you the costs you incur to
engage a registered, licensed towing or recovery company or an agent that Club 4X4 has authorised to
transport, tow or recover the vehicle to the nearest town or sealed road, whichever is closest. Reimbursement
will be based on the provision of a tax invoice from the registered, licensed towing or recovery company or
                        authorised agent of Club 4X4.

The PDS is effective April 1st 2016 and the grey area regarding recovery to a gazetted rd has been cleaned up and is now in black and white as to where you will be recovered to in the event of a breakdown or a bogged/stuck situation. The Offroad Recovery premiums payable have increased, and the excess is now on a sliding scale with 5% of the recovery costs above $1500 being payable by the insured person.

I think this is a good solution and don't know of any other insurer with similar offroad recovery insurance. Other Insurers will all cover you in the event of an accident, but not for mechanical breakdown or being bogged etc.

The link to the announcement is here: http://www.club4x4.com.au/news-suppl...ctive-april-1/

and to the PDS supplement here: http://www.club4x4.com.au/pds/motor-...ril-1-2016.pdf

I am covered for the $15,000 offroad insurance, so potentially my excess could be $875 if the recovery costs the full $15,000. If you are insured for $30,000 in recovery costs, then the max you will pay in excess is $1625. I have no issue with this and would much prefer to pay this than the full $30,000. One thing to note though, is that you need to pay the recovery bill and submit it to Club4x4 for reimbursement once your claim is accepted.

Also note, that you can only claim this recovery insurance once during the policy period(annual)

Nobody likes increases in premiums etc, but I see this as a win for the 4wd community and a good product being made even better.

If the new wording is going to work better for your circumstances, the new wording will apply. No extra premiums will be charged during your current policy period, but if you bought with the old wording and want to claim under the new one, you will simply be asked to pay the new excess structure.
That is a pretty fair offer I have to say.

                            Exclusions

Anyone else notice Club 4x4's promo photo shows Barnsey recovering a Landrover..................? Probably hard to get a photo of a Pajero on his truck!

Extract from the Club4x4 Insurance PDS:

                            Other general exclusions:

                            You are not covered for loss, damage or legal liability: • caused by the use or accidental addition by any person of incorrect fuel;

Interesting exclusion from a specialist insurer of diesel 4WDs.......
Other insurers, eg, RAA, do cover accidental mis-fueling.

As with most insurances, they all have differences, making it difficult to compare - (probably deliberate?). Different policies will suit different people & usage - certainly not "one size fits all".

We should all read our PDS carefully & as someone else suggested, talk to your preferred repairer about how good they find your insurer to deal with over claims.
