Default Reverse Camera Mirror/GPS

Hi guys,

I have a MY14 Pajero with the reverse camera built into the rear vision mirror.

I use a windscreen mounted Garmin GPS which I power from the typical cable running to the nearest cigarette lighter.

I was wondering if it was possible to piggy back onto the electrical cabling from the reverse camera in the mirror to provide the outlet to power the Garmin.

It would save having a cable hanging from the windscreen and down the front dash to the lighter.

Can any electrical experts give their thoughts?

Cheers, Paul

Is your Garmin 12V or 5V? I am planning to do similar for my dash cam which is 5V. If 5V, Jaycar has a 5V USB Charger Wiring Kit which is small enough to ba attached to the back of the mirror or the dashcam and connect its wires to the pins for the auto-chromatic mirror connector behind the mirror.

If 12V, should be simple if the Garmin does not draw too much current.

Thanks Vlad. Do you think the wiring world have enough oomph to have a 12v wire piggy backing onto it?

It doesn't take much strength to power that small screen I am guessing.

I have searched the internet and my manuals back can't find any specs to help.

What is the rating of the power adapter for the Garmin? It should say what is output voltage and current are. My dashcam is 5V and 100Ma so no issues. What model Garmin do you have?

Hi Paul,
Her is another way to tidy up the cables running across the dash. The little cover can be popped out, along with the speaker cover/ speaker (depending on model) which then gives access to run a wire down to the back of the 12volt socket on the console
Hope this helps
Jim
