NP 2003 diesel rev range towing

Im wondering what rev range most people drive their manual 3.2 Pajeros to when towing vans or loads.
Ive tried towing and changing up from fourth gear at 2600 but seem to enter 5th then under the 2000 rpm where max torque is .
If I change up at 2900 -3000 then I enter 5th pretty much at 2000 and get better pull .
Is 3000 a bit too many revs and overworking the engine ?
    Thanks to all .

3000rpm is fine. I towed my 1.6T camper in my auto NP in 4th gear at 2700rpm (100kph gps) for hours on end across the Nullarbor. It regularly saw 3500rpm + through the years when accelerating hard. Mind you they get a bit noisey up in those rpms!!!!!!
