    Crown wheel and pinion interchangeability

Any one here know, if the gen2 8" front diff uses the same cw+p as the gen1 8" front diff? i can not seem to source a Gen 1 front diff in 4.875 flrare as hens teeth as they were only in v6 manual pajeros. There are plenty of gen 1 4.625, and plenty of gen 2 4.875 diffs around, would anyone know if they use the same pinion and crownwheel?

Gen 1 were low pinion, Gen 2 high pinion. I don't believe they are interchangeable.

Have you looked at what's required to install a Gen 2 high pinion into your Gen 1?

Ahh true. Forgot about that! No I havent mate, I have looked at every way to get a lokka in the front. 4.875 gen1 8" diffs are nearly impossible to source. Do you know where I would find a gen2 diff into gen1. I have been a member for a few years and have been searching every corner of the web for by best option. The gen2 front diff would have super select thats the only issue I see. Custom drive shaft and probably gen 2 cvs. Sounds kinda hard. Apparently early delicas and 4x4 vans had a rear crown wheel and pinion that will slip into a 8" gen1 diff.

Failing all this it might be swap both diffs to 1:4.625 and install crawler gears. All expensive. Possible to put an arb air locker in the rear for around 2k installed

I believe the gen 2 front diff is a bolt in to a gen 1. Housing and all.

I remember reading about this on outerlimits4x4 years ago, I think the yanks were doing it to get a front locker. Try having a search on there but if gen2 parts are as cheap in oz as they are in nz then I'd just buy a front diff and take a punt that it will fit.

well, another option is to swap both diffs to 4.625 ... does anyone here know if running lower gears with a diesel is worth it? i imagine better highway economy but down low speeds ??
