Have you ever gotten out and explored Australia? If you have, you’d have experienced how rugged and unrelenting it is. Mitsubishi also knows how tough Australian conditions truly are, whether it’s on-road or off-road on the battering Australian coastline climate or the intense Australian outback. That’s why so much of the testing of the new 2016 Mitsubishi Triton was done right here in our own backyard. From the chassis and suspension tuning to the engine development and interior design, all aspects of the new Triton were developed just for the demands of the Australian environment.
Some of the key areas of focus included improving the responsiveness and torque delivery of the engine, and maintaining high speed stability and towing stability especially on rough roads to give you a safer Triton and one that’s easy to drive. Mitsubishi’s development of the new Triton was completed through multiple tests on surfaces ranging from sand, gravel and coarse bitumen, as well as towing and heavy duty off-road testing for good measure, because you can never have enough test data!
But test data doesn’t account for everything. It doesn’t take into account the most important thing: what you feel in the seat of your pants when you drive, and what it’s like to use for the longest family adventures or the toughest work jobs. So Koichi Namiki, Mitsubishi Motor’s Triton global lead, travelled across Australia to personally meet with long-time owners and hard-working Triton users from mining, farming and other industries to gain all-important user feedback and understand the daily duties of their Tritons. All of this information was then used for further improvement and to ensure the new Triton can properly handle the roughest conditions Australia has to offer.
Developing the new Mitsubishi Triton in Australia was a huge challenge (and one which was extremely fun and rewarding), but was so successful that the new Mitsubishi Challenger, which will be released later this year, is also undergoing the same rigorous Australian testing as the Triton.
