I’m interested in maybe the forty mile brake track, what is it like at this time of year?

What side of Melbourne are you on ? That will determine where you go.

If east, head to Kirth Kiln out of Gembrook for a nice lunch stop and follow the tracks up to Powelltown and back home again. There's a good book around called 4WD Treks Close to Melbourne, available at most big 4WD outlets and it's in there.

If North, head up to the Tracks around Strath Creek or Mt Strathbogie.
