Coolant leak - where is it coming from?

    Hi guys,

I had my car apart for a few days while waiting for a new exhaust manifold and today I had a look for a coolant leak (I've been having a very slow leak for a few months, only had to top it up once in half a year though). Spotted it straight away under RH exhaust manifold, at the front of the engine - see pics. I'm sure it wasn't there when I removed the exhaust manifold one week ago - so it looks like it only happens when the car is cold for a long period of time.

Where do you think it is coming from?

There appears to be a Welsh plug near the top of the leak, they sometimes leak.

I think you're asking what a welsh plug is....if not sorry.

Simplified its used during the casting of block or head of engine but then capped off using a welsh or core plug.....pic below. Looking at Partsouq.com the 3.2 has around 8 of them on the block and 1 on the head.

Actually it's a WelCh plug, but same same.

I remember as a kid, dad's engine sprang a leak when we were leaving on a trip to the big smoke. Our neighbour, a boilermaker cum fitter chiselled a piece of metal out of the lid of a 44 gallon drum and fashioned a replacement Welch plug. We were on the road in no time at all.

Thanks for the clarification as I’ve only known them as “freeze plugs”.
On the US V8’s it’s common to see them rust through causing pin hole leaks.

When i was recently chasing a leak on our NS DiD it took many frustrating weeks. Finally found it. The coolant was leaking out the small round hole on the top of the water pump.

The small hole on t op of the water pump is actually a drain to take away the seepage past the water pump seal. It should be dry at all times of course, but if the seal does seep, at least hopefully the bearings will not be affected.

I was losing 250 to 350ml a day. New pump and no more loss of coolant.

i agree with you, leaks like these occur more frequently than you think and its because of general wear and tear
