    Transmission oil cooler

I recalled my BA Falcon had a small cooler installed by previous owner. Don't know much about these coolers except that I assumed those who towed a lot would install one. Still not sure if my assumption is correct. So with my new NX I wonder if there is any benefit to install one even though I have no immediate plans to tow anything more than an occasional Bunnings box trailer. I do plan to travel a bit but not on rough terrain or sand. So do you think I should install one?

Hey bud not sure if you're aware but the Pajero has a small cooler as standard fitted. Check thread below.

All Gen 4 Pajero's have an ATF cooler in the base of the radiator and an additional separate ATF cooler. From the factory these work pretty well but fit a split pan design Bullard like ARB, TJM, OL, MCC etc and airflow is restricted so expect ATF temperatures to increase especially under high load conditions.

Rather than fitting another ATF cooler or upgrading to a larger size ATF cooler, better to do something that prevents the ATF from getting hot unnecessarily.
Solution is a Torque Convertor Lockup kit, multiple choices available but the best is been designed and built by a forum member who has a NX, Marshall from MM4x4,

A cooler helps to get rid of the heat, locking the torque converter stops generating the heat.

Does that impact new car warranty?

If you have transmission failure I would say a big yes.

Yes, if it can be proved that the mod caused or contributed to the trans failure, however the onus will be on you to prove it did not! The MM4x4 Lockup kits are the only kits that do not bypass the factory protections for the auto transmission control. Because your ATF does not get as hot the ATF will last longer and therefore you are less likely to have transmission failure.

What sort of temps are people seeing out of their NX ATF? We did our first trip in our new NX last week and were not towing anything but were also not babying it. We moved from a 150 prado where AT pan temps over 100C are not uncommon in heavy traffic, let along towing a large van. I have seen TC temps over 130 whilst towing in some steep stuff. When I plugged the ultragauge into the NX I was seeing ATF temps of 40 - 50? Is this correct? We are in QLD so that would have only been a couple of degrees above the road surface temp!
                  Cheers,

Prados do not have a dedicated ATF cooler and I believe many Prado owners get an aftermarket unit fitted. By contrast, Pajeros (at least later models) have a small factory-fitted ATF cooler. Before I got my LockUp Mate, when not towing and not straining up hills, my Scangauge would typically report ATF temps of around 65 to 75 degrees, once the engine had warmed up, and quickly rose when towing/uphill. (Since LockUp Mate, temps are typically 10-12 degrees cooler, and increase much less when towing )

Your reported 40-50 degrees sounds a bit on the low side to me (assuming the NX hasn't changed from the NW??). Are you sure the parameters you input to get the ATF reading were correct? A hex character off can mean quite a difference in the reading. Elsewhere on the forum users give ATF temp codes for the Ultrgauge.

Those temps are too low so I'm guessing the same as Pwoffey, the setting must be wrong in the gauge.

My NX stays around 60-70 most of the time towing in Tassie at the moment with automate on all the time. Turn automate off and it goes up 10-15 degrees quickly.

Thanks I'll look into it. I thought the same... hence the question. I've only just plugged the UG in so I'll start messing around with it.

I've also had a problem with the Ultra Gauge Blue reading low temp values for the auto transmission fluid, it must be a setting but as yet I haven't been able to resolve it.

It doesn't work if you use the preset settings. You need to program a dedicated setting for it to work. The details are in this forum if you do a search. (Sorry, not sure of which thread)
