88 mmc (import) rear disc caliper workshop manual

hey guys , if anyone could help me out as my LH side rear brake caliper (just been replaced ) and that's from a wrecker in S.A is or seems to be still having problems , like with the old one when i brought the car it was metal to metal on the left hand rear . so new pads were installed by me , and i can never find the correct pads , (very close but needing just a touch up with the grinder ) anyways that lasted a whole four thousand km's 4000 ( not 40,000 LOL) and they looked like this

so out they come again , and we took the caliper apart and cleaned it all (wet/dry) the piston blew compressed air through the pipe inlet etc. reinstalled it , and WALLAH good brakes again , thought that solved the problem , until 2,500 km's later it almost caught on fire (due to it getting very hot ) i pulled over to find smoke coming from the LH side rear ... the piston had siesed locking the brake on almost .. .. so then after an australia wide brake hunt LOL i found one at japanese commercial dismantlers (S.A) that being a complete rear caliper costing $127 delivered , it worked fine out of the car and was reasonably clean , so it got put in seemed to work graet for the first few km's then ,, checking things (as you do) the LH rear wheel was too hot to touch and the right rather cool , and now the pads are rubbing again as i can hear them (mainly on right hand corners ) am really out of answers though i got all the questions ,,, someone metioned the modulator and control unit ...,, though im not sure my 1988 NF has these things (early form of ABS) IVE BEEN TOLD ,, sorry about the story but some help would be good as to where i could find info. as i dont/or cant afford rather to pay a brake specialist and if i had more info. i could fix it myself ,,, cheers

My sympaties, yep I agree these rear disks are somewhat of a black art.

My 180SX also uses a similar system of cable etc, and having the rotors and pads replaced on the Paj last month , I wouldnt be surprised if it is also binding still.

My only suggestion may be a caliper rebuild , I had my 180's done at a engineering Co in Bowen Hills in brizzy , BHSS I think it was , it wasnt too expensive.

Have to be carefull with these as the binding caliper could be causing further issues in the LSD , and potentially burning it out as well

hi just a throught have you check the master cylinder as it has a proportion valve in it
it might not be returning to it's proper place and leaveing the brake caliper partly touching or also check the hand brake cable to make sure it is not binding on the LH side as well i can check with work to see if i can get pads for your paj at trade price
just send me details of your car and i will see what i can do
just an idea hope it helps
      cheers liam

Dont know if it helps , but on the pommie site, has been a discussion about the handbrake cables becoming seized
