    New head unit install help

I am about to install an after market head unit to replace the OEM unit in my NX and the cabling has been doing my head in. I think I have it mostly sorted now but do have a further query that one of you might be able to advise on.

The head unit comes with an ISO cable loom which has fixed wires and a number of loose plastic capped wires. These wires are labelled key1, key 2, reverse, brake, amp and ground. I have bought 3 other Aepro harnesses. The first (CHMB2C) is the SWC harness which fits to the ISO loom to allow the steering controls to work. The second (APUNIPL2) is a patch lead which connects to the SWC harness and to 3 of the loose ISO wires, key1, key 2 and ground. The third (APMVT01) is the OEM camera enabling harness which connects to the new head unit camera input harness. It also has a wire labelled reverse, which I assume is to be connected to the loose ISO wire labelled reverse.

It is my understanding I don't need the ISO amp wire connected but my main question is I am unsure if I need to connect something to the ISO brake labelled wire.

I have been told I can just tape up the plug and ground wire on the APUNIPL2 which is not required and also the red and white RCA plugs and ground wire on the CHMB2C.

I have not yet pulled the dash to pieces to fit the head unit as I wanted to make sure I knew what I had to do before I did so and that I had all the correct bits. I am assuming the harness plugs and sockets will fit to the OEM harness plugs. Any advice or reassurance therefore would be greatly appreciated.

There are other cables required for the head unit to function (gps, microphone, usb sockets) but that seems straight forward.

I completed the installation about a week ago and overall much happier with this head unit rather than the OEM model. I finally settled on the Polaris Toyota Luxx (they have a Universal Luxx but the Toyota Luxx fits perfectly into the front facia). I now have off-road and turn-by-turn on-road mapping which do not require internet/phone signal. Even though using the OEM camera, the rear view display isn’t cropped as much as the OEM did and is much clearer. Sound quality is much better (although I’m not an audiophile) and the head unit comes with CD/DVD slot, 2 SD slots and a USB auxiliary input slot in the front face.

Not perfect though. Whilst it has hands free phone calls, I can’t dial with voice command. I can work around by voice dialling directly on the mobile phone, which then connects to the head unit when call is answered. The other slight annoyance is the screen, whilst clear and sharp is glossy, not matt. When the sun shines on my partner’s usually light clothing there’s a significant reflection.

The replacement unit is double DIN but the OEM model is a little shorter in height and depth than double DIN. This meant that with all the new harnesses, gps cable, USB cable and microphone cable, it was a very tight fit behind and it only just fitted under a cross member. I also had to drill holes into the OEM mounting brackets to fit the new unit to get it flush at the front.

The off road mapping is OziExplorer using Hema maps (which come with the unit) and I use Sygic for on road mapping (I bought the world licence which means I can download maps for any country, subject to space limitations on my phone or head unit. The licence allows you to run it on 3 android devices).

Hey Mundy, what model Pajero do you have? Are you saying the Toyota Luxx head unit fits the standard fascia? And you didn’t have to buy one? If so that’s great!

If your head unit is running Ozi Explorer, you should be able to load any of the free maps from Get Lost Maps. They are far better than the Hema maps and good resolution down to 1:25K. Hema want to charge an annual fee to get their maps at that resolution.

I have a 2015 NX GLS. Yes, no need for new facia or make up piece with the Toyota Luxx. But as I said, I had to drill the OEM brackets to be able to mount the unit, taking care to ensure the front face aligned with the facia.

I had also meant to note that the Toyota Luxx has a USB auxilliary input slot on the front face, in addition to the two that plug into the rear, whilst the Universal Luxx has only the rear two.

Yes, I have checked out Get Lost Maps and have downloaded a few. I have had OziExplorer on my PC for a long time so already have lots of maps for it. I might add that on a PC I much prefer Memory Map to OziExplorer but on Android I prefer OziExplorer.

I have Memory Map too but I think it's a bit clumsy to use and it's harder to get the full map, plus it costs to get the maps. They cancelled the licence for the Australian distributor about a year ago and the site was offline for a while which made getting any new maps difficult.

Are you able to upload a pic of the install?

The Get Lost Maps for Qld are only 1:75k resolution which makes them not much better than Hema. Not really much good off road.
