Hey guys,

Anyone watching the latest season of Pats show? What are people's thoughts? It's a very different show compared to previous seasons..

Starting to move towards a more 4wd Action style. More about looking for 4wd tracks rather than the destination it seems. Still don't mind it but I don't think it's quite as good. Do wish he'd turn off the flashing drl's though, they are really annoying.

I gave up on Pat a couple of years ago, though I have seen a few bits on tv now and then. I'm finding the state of the 4wd shows to be pretty poor now. Pat - this is how you 4wd with the expensive gear when you don't pay for it and shave every day out on the track. 4wd Action - No more indepth talking about tracks and destinations, just drive hard until you break something. ...like what do you do when you have one wheel on your 4wd without any wheel nuts holding the wheel on (because this always happens)?

A) McGyver a metal detector from a tablet, a bit of copper wire and a set of headphones

B) use the vehicle’s wheel nut brace for something useful

C) panic

Yeah it’s all about the sponsorship dollars. And just about all of them are kitted out with expensive and in-necessary toys that they use for about a day at most.

I too liked All 4 Adventure and still do to a point. The bending of the unimog’s steering arm was a bit far fetched and seems to be headed in the direction of the Leyland brothers by dad’s account.

I saw patriot camper’s program called Patriot Games. Not bad but very little regard for the environment and they were in vehicles that are pretty much unobtainable to most of us (namely that 6x6 beast that has some sort of huge lift in it).

If your audience isn’t into 4wdn to begin with, you just further polarise those for and those against 4wdn. “Proper” 4wdn isn’t always fun, but that’s what you take to get to the good locations, tracks or remoteness (which is fast being lost to technology).

I also find Patriot Games a massive turnoff. They show they have little regard for anyone or anything other than themselves.

With all of these shows there is a lot of product flogging and marketing. If you are new to 4wd you can end up thinking you need a lot more gear than you need to get out and enjoy the country.

What I don't like about some of them is the bush bashing just for the sake of it. I love getting out on to the tracks and black or double black are fine but I prefer to have a destination in mind doing that. It could be an escarpment, a mountain hut or a nice camp ground, just something to aim for.

Which is where Pat C started, but now moving in to I think, having to 'prove' the Amarok for his sponsors.

You may be right, but I think he's stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Some viewers are interested in the touring / travel guide market, who want to see the country and aren't too fussed about passing by the tougher tracks.

Other viewers are more interested in tackling the tougher tracks, those who want to be able to drive whatever track is between them and their intended destination. Those who remember the Pat Callinan who built "Otis", the monster Suzuki:


I think he leaned too far towards the "touring" group, and he's attempting to draw back some of the more hard-core group. Ultimately, he can please some of the viewers all of the time, and all of the viewers some of the time, but he can't please all of the viewers all of the time.

Seeing everyone is hating on these shows that are being made - How about we set up a section here in the forum where those that can do better can link their youtube channels and we can all watch them... (No critique of course, because they are not celebrities or have big budgets etc)

There are a couple of guys on here that are not afraid to post videos and I don't mind watching their efforts when they post them, some are really great in fact...
Sure, they don't have the polished finish, the brilliant editing, the cinematography, the countless locations or the big budgets... but they are enjoyable to watch all the same..

So rather than hate on those out there giving it a go and providing us with some free (albeit subsidised by sponsor plugs) content that is often quite enjoyable to watch - let us see your awesome home made videos with the old iPhone etc (Please remember - DO NOT FILM IN PORTRAIT MODE).....

I don't see anyone hating anything. Comments are far different to hate posts.

Yeah, Can't say I see any hate particularly. Just personal opinion on the content subject matter.

I'll still sit and watch just about any of them, though Patriot Games I've turned off a few times recently. Personally I'd rather be out there driving, touring and camping however personal circumstances stop that from happening so these shows are the next best thing and feed my imagination. Just that some do it better than others.
