How do you keep stuff attached to windows

In particular, sun screens in the rear compartment.

Try as I might, I just haven't found a product that works.

Self adhesive velcro was my thing. Unfortunately, when it gets hot, the adhesive on the window turns to goo and you loose that adhesion. It works for a while, then a few hot days and it goes to crap. And its a right pain removing all the goo to start again. I've tried numerous types of velcro, it all turns to goo.

For the NX, I thought I would try suction cups. Again, they seem to hold for a bit then they come unstuck and you repeat the merry dance again.

So curious, those that have sunshields of whatever type on their rear cabin windows, how do you make it stick?

I don't have sunscreens on the internal surface of the window but I have a perspex sheet on the outside. It is held on by about a dozen very flexible, very shallow draft (almost flat), clear plastic suction rings. They have never come off even after driving over thousands of kms of corrugated roads, and in hot sun. Quite surprising actually. You've got to have a sufficient number of cups to support the weight (trial and error!). Before putting them on, before each big trip, I scrupulously clean both the glass and the surface of the plastic cups. I wet each cup surface with just a little plain water and press the cup firmly to the glass. After a trip, the little buggers are still stuck on so tightly I have to use a thin flexible metal kitchen spatula to detach them.

I tried rubber suction cups, both shallow and deeper drafts, but the seal at the rims was never good enough. Anyway the flexible plastic thinggies are cheap and leave no mess, so worth a try if those are not the sort you've used already.

Yep, tried those on the side windows: fail.

I reckon our usage is different. Yours is behind a barrier/shade (edit - assuming non clear perspex, may be a wrong assumption??). Mine are directly on the inside glass, magnified sun and high temps. I just cant get them to stay put.

I use the Solarscreen shades in my NW and I also found the same problem, particularly on the side with the radio aerial in the glass. The best solution I've found so far is to clean the window and suction caps of all contaminants and then apply a small coating of silicone spray to good quality suction caps. This has now held on for a few months without coming off.

How do you keep stuff attached to windows

          Hi,
My solution for fixing fly mesh screens to the two pop out rear windows and to the rear side door windows is:-
On the next white goods council clean up scrounge for some old fridges and strip the magnetic door seals. Take the seals leave the doors.
Strip the plastic off to expose the magnetic strip. A box cutter knife is good for this job.
Make up your fly screen panels to size plus enough for a fold over hem on all sides.
Weld/join the hem seam using a soldering iron. I used an old SCR pistol drill/universal motor speed control to control the temperature.
Make the hem fold over just big enough to slide in the magnetic strip.
Note have the magnetic strip in two segments for each side, this will allow you to fold the panel for storage.
Also make sure the strips are "facing" the same way else some will not attach.
Then whilst vehicle is not in motion, and whilst remaining so, attach mesh panels over the windows. Remove panels before proceeding.

Well, the ball has been dropped.

Some years ago I had cheap shades and clear suction cups on the back screen in my then Fairlane, went fishing and came back to a fire on the back seat, where the suction cups acted as a magnifying glass, never again, hope this helps

Thanks for the replies gents. I redid my rear window yesterday before this thread, hence why I asked. For the main window, this time around I'm trying "outdoor" double sided tape, attaching the velcro to the window. I suspect it will turn to goo too on a hot day >35degrees, but probably have 8-9 months before that happens again.

The tinted glass gets very, very hot in high ambients and sunshine, and this is where the problem lies. I have no issue with the velco sticking to the screen itself, and its only 3mm away from the glass. It's only on the glass where the adhesive cant handle the high temps and it turns to jelly.

Attaching screens outside isn't an option for me, sorry.

Looking at my side windows yesterday, I did think about using some o'ring grease to help create a better seal. New tough, black rubber suction cups from clark rubber were a resounding fail in only a matter of minutes. I think Onslow may be onto something re the silicon spray. Might try that today. The left hand side is a pain when it falls off in the field, because its blocked by the fridge and very hard to access. Its flapping around at the moment, so I have to do something there......but my fridge is in place

I have trouble with the dashcam falling off every now and then – it only has a suction cup, it’s not one with a glue-on clamp. I found, the same as OnSlow, that cleaning the glass and the suction cups is a big help to keeping them on longer AND I’m going to give the silicone spray a go as well – I like the sound of that.

I do the same except never tried the silicon spray and after a couple of weeks usually only one or two have come unstuck and they are the ones that go over stickers and demisters/aerial tracks.

Alternatively I have some old aircraft double sided tape you are welcome to try some? I have used it to stick my UHF hand piece clip to the dash and it hasn't moved in 5 or so years.

I cut and stuck sunland-static-cling to the rear window 2-3 years ago, it is still attached which surprised me, I expected it to last about 6 month.

Yes I noted that when I first put on my rear window protector (Sharkcaver: it is clear perspex) with the clear flexible plastic suction rings. But what is did was (laboriously) cut out little circles of opaque thin foam - you can get A4 sized sheets at OfficeWorks - and attached one of these to the neck of each cup. So the layers are: window glass, plastic suction ring, opaque foam (same diameter as suction ring), and finally clear perspex. Never had a problem with point foci of excess heat.

I think the most important things are the cleanliness of the two opposing surfaces and the smooth seal on the rim of the suction cup.

Does it have to be attached to the glass? What about fabing up something like an 'L' bracket or similar which is removable? Maybe Rivnutting (aluminium) the plastic surrounds could be the way to go. Although slightly impinging on aesthetics it would leave a flush finish.

Or another idea could be clips similar to the switchlight provided with the Lockup Mate again attaching to the plastic surrounds rather than the glass.

For my rear shades I just cut up cheap silver windscreen shades larger than the glass area and tucked the edges behind the plastic trims around the glass. Rear side windows are easy as the hinge open a bit but the rear window took a little more time as I had to lift most of the trim to tuck the shade under it.
                            Cheers, Hatto

Hatto, that is a brilliant yet simple option. Just tried it myself and it is quite easy, just have to invest in better quality sunshade to do a proper job.
