Super Select / Centre diff issues

This will probably ramble a bit so excuses for that....

    Here is what is happening:

2H - flashing 4wd lights -solenoids changed, no difference
    4H - Instantly lights up 4wd lights

4H CD lock, 4wd lights stay on, CD lock flashes, does same for 4Low
Very hard to get it into 4wd low

My driveway is a little steep, so reversing up it gently screeches a tyre in 2H but goes up fine in 4H

We were going up and down the driveway yesterday and I noticed that the rear wheels where chattering at the driveway bend, almost like a locked rear diff - this was in both 2H and 4H.

I've looked (mournfully) at http://4wd.blogeasy.com/article.view...ticleID=318776 but it doesn't seem to address my diff lock issue.

Also sometimes the diff lock light will come on by itself in either 2H and 4H but if I shift from Low to High (or vice-versa) the light goes out.

I've been spending money on this thing since April and I'm still not close to taking her for a roadie

If there is someone in my area (Tullamarine) that could diagnose this for me I would be eternally grateful!

    Update

I found out that the guy I got the solenoids from also had the flashing lights issue (about a week after I swapped them lol) so I was trawling through old posts and found someone who recommended VS002 from Ashdown-Ingram back in 2010 so I gave them a call as they're just up the road.

That solenoid is no longer available but they have an alternative (SWX029) which only has the description "VSV Solenoid N/C 12v Universal Solenoid Valve" which I am hoping will work.

It's made by a company called Quantum Pro but I can't find a datasheet on it, all I have is the scanned document from the catalogue that Ashdown-Ingram sent me.

They're only $30+ each so fingers crossed, will be buying and fitting a pair Friday.

Also going to drop the transfer case a little and see about cleaning the switches to fix the centre diff lock flashing light issue.

    Cheers
    Dave

Just another thought - If its hard to get it into gear then you may want to check the selector bush. You could be moving the lever but not actually changing gear if that makes sense

From what you have described is that the front clutch has failed engaged, this would be why the lights come on quickly when engaging 4WD because the clutch on the front axle is already engaged. Flashing lights when shifting back to 2H support this idea.

I would check for leaks, proper connections along the vacuum lines to the front axle clutch. Also check that the stripe on the vacuum tube matches that on the solenoids.

Tires chattering on a bend would either indicate the centre diff is locked or that you are in 2WD and there is not enough grip.

As a general rule, part time 4WD (centre diff locked if you have one) shouldn't be used on a paved surface, as when cornering front and rear wheels travel different distances, which causes strain on the drive train. May not be a problem as long as one or more tires is able to slip, hence why it's okay to use on loose surfaces.

            Thanks for the replies...

I jumped in to her yesterday and was greeted by just the 2 lights which was a nice surprise, however it wasn't long before the 4wd lights started flashing again

Then I engaged 4H and the 4wd lights didn't come on (!) so I rocked her back & forward a little and they came back on so I am now back where I was.

The tyres have stopped chattering too, just seemed to be that 1 time, go figure.

I will be fitting the new solenoids today and have my fingers crossed that will solve the 4wd flashing issue but I will still probably have to drop the transfer case to take the switches out and clean them up to fix the orange flashing fault. I don't know which of the 5 switches I need to clean so I'll probably do them all.

Stripes are correct, vacuum seems good.

I'll also have a look at the selector bush too while I'm at it, but I think that's from disuse as it's now getting easier to get it into 4L. I wasn't aware there was a selector bush on the 4wd shift lever.

            Cheers

              4wd gear lever boot

At the base of the 4wd lever there's a little rubber boot attached to a breather that runs back to the transfer case . Is this boot critical for anything other than keeping crap out of the box ? That theirs a breather attached to it has me a little miffed
Over capitalized NK.I'm running out of things to add to it it died , now a SWB NJ with all the good stuff from the NK on it .

                Quick update

Well the new solenoids didn't make any difference.
Now for some reason my actuator rod is not moving at all but my light issue is exactly the same.

Rain has stopped play for now.

I'm still stuck with my flashing light syndrome

Is there anyone in my area who knows the system and can get it working?
Am at my wits end with this damn thing.

                  I wanna go from to

                  Cheers

check the pipes on the front diff, I had good solenoids and was actually getting 2wd but my lights were flashing for 90% of the time (10% they would turn off like they should) - I found that an oil leak had caused the pipe onto the diff actuator to swell and the vacuum was not pulling the unit completely into 2wd position and causing the issue. this could also happen with a split pipe or similar, so for the sake of a 5 minute check, check the pipes are snug onto the fittings down at the front diff
