I looked into this for my NS.
After speaking to a few transmission specialists the outstanding response was 'NO'. Apparently there is no reason to when you can just buy a torque converter lockup kit and a valve body kit.
I would love to make the torque converter lock up a bit earlier when towing and under full throttle and also when when in manual mode hence reducing temp when towing and in sand.NS Pajero, with stuff.

Rest assured once someone achieves this and a reprogram is possible then everyone will know.

You have to be very careful changing the setting for the lock up. If they look up too early they can get very hot
. I had lock up switch on my Patrol and after a while never used it just let the transmission do its own thing..
