A/Transmission oil filter or mesh strainer ?

    Hi,
Earlier questions from myself, and subsequent comments from other members has revealed that some of us believe the internal a/t oil filter is infact not a true filter at all, but a mesh strainer only.

Can a member who has or will be changing their factory strainer in the near future, please solve the mystery. It might be necessary to cut the item open to be sure of its construction.

I would appreciate solving this issue. Thank you for your help.

    Barry.

PS, As far as I understand filter replacement is not called up by Mitsubishi (per my 2003 NP Service Book for example), I accept that some members will still choose to replace it, which no doubt is wise in some cases.
I stand corrected if members have found evidence that replacement is called up.

AFAIK (or have been able to locate in the booklet) there is no replacement mentioned in the NM's service schedule. Looking through the workshop manual I can't find any mention of servicing it - in one schematic diagram (ie without illustrations of what items actually look like) there is mention of a 'filter' in the transmission.
    2010 MY 2011 VR-X V6. Stock standard.

Previously 02 NM auto V6 Exceed silver. Extra transmission cooler & transmission temp gauge, activated rear lights, Impco sequential LPG system, Redback (Wildcat) Headers, heavy duty radiator. Lovells shocks F & R, Polyair bags in rear.

My original Pajero experience - '90 NG Superwagon, 3.0 V6 manual bought new and kept until 1998. Great vehicle, no problems apart from the noisy valve lifters typical of that engine.

The filter inside the transmission looks like this:

I'm thinking of adding an additional filter inline of the transmission oil cooler hose, maybe something like this:

I am pretty sure there is a real filter inside the Aisin-box, and that it is a real filter. Have not replaced my own yet, but a friend of mine did on a gen III, and used a filter similar to the one chrisall links to.
I am going to replace mine this year, as mine is 220.000KM now.
In one of my previous cars I had a Aisin AF33-5, 5-speed, pretty similar in function as the one in our Pajeros (well, smaller/lower capacity and only FWD). That box lacked a real filter, only a mesh placed far into the mecanic. On that I used a Magnefine filter mounted on one of the rubber hoses between the box and cooler. Took me 10 minutes to mount, is cheap, and is known for doing a great job reducing particles. AFAIK several US car brands use Magnefine as OEM on their autoboxes and powersteering. It's a very simple but effective filter, both magnetic and paper, and is designed not to block or limit the oil flow significant.
Duct tape is like the force - it has a light side and a dark side and it holds the universe together.
        My introduction.

Jatco has filter material (as in post #3) Aisin Has fine SS mesh (as in photo) DO NOT just wash them out and reuse. After longlife it is possible for the mesh to shred and you pump those bits through the trans. Valve bodies don't like it.
