    NM NP DiD Fuel Filters....

    Hi peoples,

Been looking into Fuel Filters for the DiD with injector pump - searching for the the best efficiency spin on replacement filter.
I got a heap of cross references (board at work one night) and emailed all the manufacturers requesting tech info. To my disappointment I have only had 3 replies thus far.

    RYCO Z611 - 10.6 Micron Absolute
I have checked with the engineering manager and he has informed me that the absolute on the media is 10.6

    SAKURA FC-1009 - 14.97 Micron @ 98.67%
Nominal micron rating @50% eff: 4.27 microns Absolute micron rating @98.67% eff: 14.97 microns

    FLEETGUARD FF5744 - 7 Micron @ 98.7%
The filter is rated at 7 micron 98.7% efficiency

This is all the data they would freely disclose to me - even when pressed for more info. As mentioned, many have never replied.
So at this stage, the RYCO and FLEETGUARD look ok but would have to pass on the Sakura.

Anyone else got any REAL data to share???

not really data, but I just took my 2 & 10 micron filters off after 30,000kms and split them open to look inside. Here is the pictures.
the one on the right is the secondary 2 micron and the one on the left is the primary ryco filter.

Wow, that is some pretty serious crud in that 2 Micron that would otherwise have gone through the fuel system.
Got me seriously thinking about a 2 or 3 micron post factory filter setup now!!!!
Having a look at the Donaldson 3 micron on Fleabay $115.00 delivered....

          DONALDSON P550390 - 10 Micron @ 50%
All our aftermarket replacements match or better the OE filters. The P550390 is 10µ at 50%.

Nothing too flash about the Donaldson......

Agree: The P550385 is rated at 12um (micron) @97.5%. and has higher specs that the ....090. This is the fuel filter Donaldson supply in their 4M41 filter pack.

It is the above information from Bruce Evans, Donaldson Australia that I extrapolated ( guessed) that the CRD factory fuel filter for the MM fuel filter is around 10 microns at 95% efficiency. The Donaldson filter is equal or better than factory filter for CRD.

Donaldson make both factory replacement fuel filters and the 3 micron 99% efficiency kit ( among others)

The filter kit I referred to is a service kit fuel air and fuel replacement filter.

THe P903316 3 micron 99% efficiency filter kit is a for general application for CRD vehicles.

                  Hill,

I accidentally gave him the CRD filter number from there website before I realised - the reply was:

The P550385 is 12µ at Beta 75 which is 98.67%.

Was rather surprised that thier CRD filter rates so poorly.

So, I enquire with Donaldson about the 3 Micron CRD kit to fit to my old pump model and this the reply

To provide additional protection for injectors, we suggest installing one of our P903316 high efficiency filter. This kit uses a 3um (micron) at 99% efficiency fuel water separating filter, and includes a water collection bowl, and spare filter. It should be installed BEFORE the factory filter. This provides fuel at better than the cleanliness level the factory filter is designed to receive and will not interfere with the engine management system. This kit will add negligible pressure drop (additional load) to the fuel system but will give you excellent protection from both dirt and water in the fuel that’s used. We recommend replacing this filter using the same service interval as the factory filter, and check the water bowl regularly for water, and drain it if there is water present. A lot of the concerns on forums and around the traps is due to outdated knowledge. Previously step filtration was required to keep the flow rate at a sufficient level but with the advancements in media technology, the micron rating can be very fine without effecting the flow.

This makes absolutely no sense at all and is contradictory to the most basic common sense...

I am thinking at this stage of just running the Fleetguard 7 Micron at $15 a pop (WA & 400km from Perth tax included) and changing it out at every 7.5k oil change....

The Donaldson ...385 is quite a good filter. Would certainly be a good option for non CRD.

The only filter that I am aware of that exceeds it is a Z699 which Ryco have informed me is 4 micron at 94% efficiency.

Parker Racor are the only filter supplier that I am aware of that have made a recommendation re CRD filtration. They state 3 micron at 95% efficiency is required for CRD.

Hill, agreed that it is not a bad filter but the Fleetguard FF5744 for NON-CRD application does exceed in efficiency hands down.

Just astounds me that a manufacturer can bring out a 3 Micron add on kit and preach how important clean fuel is for a CRD but produce a spin-on replacement filter for CRD application that is clearly just an average performer.

Rang our local Truckline dealer - he quoted me $15 ea out of Perth. Try this

Yet to give Covs (or is it Skipper Parts now I can't keep up) but my mate there was on an rdo so will give him a go in the next few days.
Even at $15 - cheap as for a 7 Micron near absolute filter
