Clunk on acceleration from zero load on highway

Cars been doing this since new, but seems to be getting slightly more noticeable. Coasting with no throttle at highway speeds if I depress the accelerator (does it with minimal input) I get a bit of a thunk/clunk noise and a mild jolt from the drivetrain. Twice (over 35,000kms) when re-engaging the cruise control (which does a bit of a jab of heavy throttle) I have had a large/loud bang and the whole car jolts.

Any thoughts on cause? Normal behaviour?

      my dealer said....

same here...I noticed the same problem maybe after 15000kms I would say, and still going strong. Not there all the time but when it does happen it keeps on going till I accelerate off that clunking speed. Mine happens around 60kph when I am coasting and just keeping up with the traffic ahead.

Mentioned this to my dealer last month along with my 60000k service and all he could blame was the raised suspension. Well its just the usual 50mm billy-lovy combo installed by opposite lock. I tried pointing that the suspension was only raised about 10000kms ago and the problem has been there before. but he was stuck hard on my suspension.

I seem to remember reading something about engine mounts here sometime ago with similar clunking but not sure if it was for this coasting clunk or something else. Certainly so far I haven't noticed any performance problems on or offroad. Hope its just a generic inherent problem with the NW without any consequences.

Mechanic told me yesterday that the drive shaft splines in mine are bit worn producing this bump as drive takes up on acceleration after coasting.

I'm wondering if there are reconditioned units to be had or some repair.

He thinks it is from a lot of towing but can be caused by lifts esp. if not done right.

I have had the engine mounts replaced on warranty on my NW. Done at about 50k, was noticing the clunk sound etc. I don't get my car serviced at a MM dealer but the new MM dealer in Geelong was excellent in this matter as well as the timing chain recall. Even gave me a a case for the day at no charge.
          Cheers

Is the drive shaft nut coming loose problem still around on the later models??

Try it in 4wd see if it does it then. Mine did jolt in 2wd on account of the rear diff bushes being due. Putting it in 4wd settles it down somewhat. Having said that the cruise increments aren't subtle
