    Bringing own oil,

Hi guys, im gonna be due for my first service . Just wondering if i bring my own oil in *Penrite HPR 10-40 semi syn*, would the dealer still charge me capped price service which i think is 397 for me ?

or will they deduct the oil costs ? My Pajero is a 3.2 diesel

    Cheers ,

Ring the dealer and ask the question.
If he says it's still $397 with you supplying the oil, ask him why.

Worth noting it is "Capped Price", not "Fixed Price" like some other brands.

This means you shouldn't be charged more than the "Capped Price", but even the full service could be less? (as if!).

Interestingly, I paid less than the price quoted above, but my car does not have "Capped Price" servicing. Might be worth asking for a "non-capped" quote with you supplying the oil?

Just got off the phone with the service dep, i ask them if i bring my own oil in, would they still charge me for capped price servicing , or deduct the oil cost.

They said they'll deduct the oil cost.

let's hope the cost of the oil from the dealer is less then what you paid for your own oil

Depends what oil they use, no doubt they have a large 40gallon drum of some kind of generic oem approved oil on hand which cost them half the price you'd pay in the store for retail packaging and quantities.
If you asked for hpr oil and they didn't have it there then they'd still get it cheaper then normal shelf price but then they have to go get it. Kmart service centre near me has supercheap auto directly across the carpark from them so in that instance who knows.

Yep, before when i first got the car, i asked them what oil they use, and they said 'Castrol 15-40w' . Just wanted a better oil for the engine, since it is a 50k+ investment, and we're gonna be keeping it for awhile .

                  Cheers,

Just an observation: the dealership didn't actually tell you much about the oil that they would put in you engine. You asked them because you (very sensibly) wanted to make a decision based on quality (type and specification). They did not answer your implied question. They told you who made the oil, and its viscosity. There is nothing in their response that guides you decision - I think that's being a bit deceptive.

Castrol make a huge range of oils labeled SAE 15W-40. They run from simple mineral oil to super-premium fully synthetics which include various additives which might be useful or might be marketing opportunities (cynical me!). The also make part-mineral / part-synthetic blends, with various additives. Then there's that packaging - retail; commercial; etc.

Almost certainly the dealership is going to use a low/mid-range, multi-fleet, mineral-based oil (perhaps RX Super) - based on meeting the manufacturer's minimum specification, their purchase price, and their need not to carry more stock varieties than absolutely necessary. Why do the dealers not say we use... name the actual product? This certainly frustrates me.

Some will argue that RX Super, if it's that, is the 'right' oil and others will disagree. That's a question for a different thread. The point is the customer has a right to know, especially if they ask a specific question; the brand isn't the oil.

                      Dan

                        Hi,

I've been taking my own oil in (Castrol Magnatec 15W-40 ) for the past 4 years (since new!). The dealer always notes it and takes the price off the fixed price service.

                        Cheers,

                            Hi Jon,

I get it from Supercheap or Repco when they have the 20% off sales.

The dealer uses the Castrol Super 15W-40 and the Magnatec is meant to be a better quality oil. So far so good, anyway!

                            Cheers,
