    auto choke problem 2.6

hi my paj has a really horrible idle when i first start up and it runs like sh** until its warmed up then its all fine. i have put it down to the auto choke. i have checked all the water hoses that run to the carby and non of them where blocked, carby is clean when i look down the top. question is what else should i check cos its really annoying especially all the stalling until it warms up.

Have you checked if the choke butterfly is closed when it's cold? If it isn't, that is the problem, choke may need adjusting. If it does close but still runs badly, possibly the thermal switch on the vacuum system isn't working. This is the Christmas tree looking thing just below the distributor, hanging off the inlet manifold with all the vacuum hoses going to it. I believe [someone correct me if I'm wrong] that it changes your ignition advance and other vacuum related devices when the engine is cold. If it's stuck it may reflect in the cold performance.
If you still have the standard carby, I recommend a Weber conversion, it's just brilliant in comparison.
Let us know what you find.

cheers for that i checked the choke butterfly when it was sort of warm one other time and it was half open but never checked it when cold. i guess i will have a look at it and the vaccuum line sounds like a good place to look to thanks

i looked into it and there seemed to be a kinked vacuum hose which in improved the problem alot still need a little bit of throttle for about 5 secs after start up. also the other thinks is it also shoots a cloud of smoke out on start up, ie fuel like its running rich, then once it warms up its fine.
