    Some SUMP Guard

I just removed my front underbody sump guard only to find the darn thing is made from fibreglass, there is no way this rubbish is going to fitted back on. just the thought of hitting a log or something hard would shatter this material causing the malfuntion of a few componants like the vacum unit, oil lines ect.
why on earth would Mitsubishi use something like this instead of something that can take abit of a knock like Steel, my previous NH was ok as it did come stock with a steel bash plate as all 4 x 4 vehicles should. so the old fibre plate is going to the boiler maker tomorrow to be used as a template, i will use a marine grade aluminium material of approx 7mm thickness. i do advise all to look into this aswell.

Brown Davis in Melbourne make a steel sump and a steel transmission plate. There is a guy on this forum that can supply a good steel intercooler plate. I have the Mitx Alloy intercooler plate that is next to useless. I will be getting a steel one frabricated that attaches to the bullbar as the body attachment points are just to weak.

thanks for this info GOBO, i have just picked up my engine sump guard that a local boiler maker / fabricator made for me $85. he used my existing fibre guard as a template and shaped this new 5 mm marine grade alloy guard perfectly, all i have to do is drill the 4 mount holes.

That good news - but - my NJ came with a steel (facotry) 'bashplate' that 'protects' the front diff and axle - plus the other bits and pieces that hang off that gear.

I guess that its about 2 to 3 mm steel (any better guesses out there?) and at best its a mud deflector. If I get adventuous ( ie have a bit of a play) it will get bent.

5mm alloy - yet another good mud deflector - if you play hard, expect to be unbolting it every other weekend to bang out the dings - serious dings - and the thicker the plate the bigger the hammer you will need to straighten it out !!.

Many people seem to love the lightweight alumimium side steps - not quite sure why............................................... .................................................. .................................................. ....

X2 Lambie. Most people seem to think that lighter is better. Not when it comes to skid plates. The "beefier" the better imo. I hate the fiberglass skids. My NP had a fiberglass skid plate on the gas tank and I when I took it off to build a metal one I discovered that I had dented my gas tank pretty bad, and the fiberglass had just gone back to its original shape and I couldnt tell. If they bend a little ya, thats a good thing cause then they absorb the blow and the chassis/Paj doesnt. Skid plates are cheaper to replace than other parts.

yeh i noticed a similar thing under my nm... what seemed to be plastic or yeh probably fibre glass.. guess its just a mud guard... not a stone guard... it is on the cards to get something more solid asap.

my prefered material was the marine grade aluminium as it dont rust and its very strong. actually my guard is 7mm thick not the 5mm i mentioned, i bet its stronger than the 3mm steel ones they all sell.

mmm they look pretty neat too. Is that the top of the original fibre glass guard underneath?
