    Broken rear door strut

Had some-one try and close my rear door today with it locked and bent the rear door strut. Was quoted $202 from Mitsubishi as a part only not to fit. Does any-one have any other ideas? Can a strut be repaired? I know you can get them regas-ed but I do not know about repaired.

Any of the strut re-gassing ppl would be able to supply a strut a heck of a lot less than MMA.
    Check ebay as well.

The same part for mine was $180 from Mitsubishi up here..

Not sure if it's the same part on an NS and NT.

Could someone post a pic of how these are mounted ?
I didn't realise they had gas struts on the later models.

It mounts at the bottom of the door the same as the older models with the steel arm that could be locked to hold the door open. The gas strut has a plastic piece you can push back to lock the strut in place to hold the door. Thanks for the quick replies I might try and ring around to a few gas strut places tomorrow and see what I can find out.

Similar to the rear seat lifter considering action and size ?

            Wreckers maybe ??

Not sure if it's gas. With the weight of the door and the spare I don't see how it could be.

If it's mounted like the rail on the earlier models it's really carrying any weight though is it, it's more like a damper, with the stopper to lock it.

I am up to my 2nd replacement strut!!

Stupid bloody thing but essential to control the door.
                  $190 each time.

The rest of the car is fine.
This stupid strut is my only issue with the NS over the old NJ.

Could the early model bar be retro fitted in place of the late model strut ?

                    Pics anyone ??

                      Hi all,

I've broken two and had them replaced under warranty as they are piss poor, such a bad design.

See how you go, anyway I think the newer cars have better struts, which prooves the original ones were rubbish!

                        Hi all,
I have had the same thing happen.
Granddaughter thought she would be very helpful shut it and put all her weight into it and bent it.

Have sourced another from the internet, but I'm wondering if there is there a way to take the ball joint end off without breaking it, or do I need to fit the whole lot including the bolts and brackets?

I would rather only fit the strut without the attachment brackets, but wondering if I try to separate them whether I will break something?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

                        Cheers bergs

The rod end of the original unscrews. Other than that a hacksaw might help

I've replaced my rear door strut a few months ago.

The strut can be pulled from the ball on both ends, quite easily I found.

I fitted the strut to the old mounts with the ball and worked. Also kept the new ones for a later date.
