The clear plastic hose is definitely the best way. For filling and draining.

No ideas at all about this particular problem but reversing can often 'unlock' traditional four wheel drives when the transfer or gearbox is 'bound up' and allow them to go back to 2wd. Especially if a few turns, in reverse are included. Probably safer...
